Explore Young Characters in the Top Ten Best Teen Romance Movies

Hi. If you read any of my books, you may know that some of my characters are young. Most are at least 20. But I have had a few teenagers sneak into my repertoire lately. HIDDEN POWERS and its sequel RISING MAGIC, which releases in March, are about kids mostly 18 and 19, but one of my guys is 14. Anyway, I saw this video on the Ten Best Teen Romances in movies and had to share it with you. Some of the movies on the list I’ve never seen, but a few are among my favorite films. I adore Ten Things I Hate About You, and Clueless and Sixteen Candles are pretty great too.

Writing really young characters is fun and very challenging. The human brain changes as much during puberty as it does between birth and three years, so teenage people are very much works in progress. I jokingly say that my young characters have to save the world while figuring out what they want to be when they grow up. That may be especially true for the kids in my Superordinary Society, but in many ways, it’s true for all kids. Did you have a perfect adolescence? Man, I sure didn’t, and I think that’s true for at least half of teens. Coping with the amazing challenges the world throws at you while simply trying to figure out who you are and what you want is a heroic feat, whether it’s as simple as having your family forget your birthday as in Sixteen Candles or literally dying for a love you can’t have like Romeo and Juliet.

I hope you enjoy this video. I sure did. : )
