Movie Reviews: Gay Films for the Holidays!

Hello, awesome readers! And thanks, Tara, for having me on the blog today.

Welcome to my Gay Movie Review blog tour!

This is the last day of the tour, but the tour calendar is at the end of the post, so you can backtrack to the other stops to find other great films to watch! As with most blog tours, there’s a prize involved. A randomly selected commenter will win a DVD of my favorite gay movie I’ve watched this year, Weekend, and a free book from my backlist.

And as a special prize at Tara’s blog, a randomly selected commenter will win a book from my backlist! So many prizes! You just have to leave your two cents. 

On with the blog…

Today I’ll be reviewing a couple of gay films that are perfect for the holidays. The first, Dorian Blues, is one of my favorite gay films of all time. And the second, Make the Yuletide Gay, was cute and sweet. Definitely holiday watching!

#1: Dorian Blues (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0398963/)

The first thing you need to know about Dorian Blues is that it stars Michael McMillian (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0573354/), the guy who plays Steve Newlin in the HBO True Blood series. The second thing you need to know is, He. Is. Awesome.

Michael McMillian is simply amazing as the teenage and young adult Dorian, coming out and coming of age in the shadow of a perfect older brother and under the disapproving eye of his a-hole father. The movie is first-person narrated—a choice that makes many an indie film seem pretentious and self-conscious. But in Dorian Blues, that narration is perfect, because Dorian Lagatos is completely self-conscious, and even a little pretentious.

Dorian Blues was a major motivation to me when I was writing my most recent release, My Fair Dork (http://www.amazon.com/Holsum-College-Publishing-Allure-ManLove/dp/1622421698). In My Fair Dork, my hero Harold spends a lot of the story in his head, ruminating over his various insecurities. What I learned from Dorian Blues is that if a hero is charming and honest, his internal dialogue can be a delight.

Only part of this movie takes place during the holidays, and that scene is not exactly a happy family moment, but the overall message of Dorian Blues is uplifting. The bad guys lose, the good guys win, and Dorian pulls through the pain of growing up.

The film won awards at L.A. Outfest, the New York Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and more. I highly recommend Dorian Blues for moments when you want to get away from the family this holiday, and veg out in someone else’s brain.

#2: Make the Yuletide Gay (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1305714/)

This film falls under the category of gay movies that could have been a M/M romance, since the premise is right out of a holiday anthology. Make the Yuletide Gay is a story about a college kid who goes home for the Christmas. His boyfriend shows up, learning that said college kid hasn’t yet told his parents he’s gay.

Hijinks ensue, and eventually college kid comes out to his parents.

The stars, Keith Jordan and Adam Ruggiero, are handsome and engaging. The plot is cute. Overall, it’s heartwarming.

This is not a groundbreaking movie, and maybe I felt this way because I’ve read so much M/M romance, but I kept thinking one of my author friends had already written this. The story felt a little too predictable to me, and I say this as someone who loves predictable movies.

Still, Make the Yuletide gay is decent holiday viewing. It won a few awards, so I’m sure other people liked it, too. 

Check out the trailer below. It’s sure to get you in a holiday mood!

This ends Daisy Harris’s Gay Movie Review Blog Tour! For those of you who’ve been following along the whole time—THANKS!

Oh, and be sure to comment at the end. Have you seen these movies? Did you love? Hate? Have any other movies to recommend? Add your opinion to the mix. 

Bio:

Birkenstock-wearing glamour girl and mother of two by immaculate conception, Daisy Harris still isn’t sure if she writes erotica. Her romances start out innocently enough. However, her characters behave like complete sluts. Much to Miss Harris’s dismay the sex tends to get completely out of hand.
She writes about fantastical creatures and about young men getting their freak on, and she’s never missed an episode of The Walking Dead.
