The theme of this Hop is “Your First experience in the LGBT Community”, but i don’t quite know how to write about that. As i’ve mentioned in other blogs, two of my dearest friends growing up were gay — though i didn’t know it for a few years — and i majored in theater in college and had many gay and lesbian pals. So gay people were a part of my life from so early on that when i first confronted the idea of “gay rights” or “gay marriage” the truth of these ideas was simply self-evident. I knew there were plenty of people who didn’t agree. I couldn’t understand them then — or now.

How could any person who claims to be an American photo copy 6not see the “inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” applies to all people — not just the ones who look or behave like us. I don’t care what your religion is or what your “good book” does or does not say. (In fact, anyone who can believe in a God who excludes people from his embrace is beyond my comprehension). Regardless, the US Constitution and Bill of Rights were NOT founded on religion and were designed to supersede all religions. Rights are rights. Each person’s right to believe as they wish does not permit them to deny rights to others — no matter what their belief system says.

I know i’m preaching to the choir. You wouldn’t have come here to be a part of the Hop if you weren’t already pretty convinced that rights are rights. Thank you! I’ll now step off my soap box.  : )
