No Penis? No Problem!

The His Own Devices Blog Tour

Cam and Sunshine, the two heroes from Jessica Freely’s new book, His Own Devices, have taken over her blog tour. Well, mainly Sunshine has…

Sunshine: Good morning and welcome to Day Three of the No Penis? No Problem! Blog tour. Today is the day our book, His Own Devices, is out and available for purchase! Woo hoo!

Cam: Thanks for to Tara for having us here, and to you for stopping by.

Sunshine: Be sure to leave a comment with your email addy, because Jessica is giving away a free book from her backlist to one lucky commenter.

Cam: Now, Here’s a little bit of information about the book:

Blurb: Cam still has the scars from his time as a slave mining malleum, a metal as strong as steel and as pliable as human flesh. His talent for fixing machines was his ticket out of that hell, but when he’s ordered to repair a malfunctioning android and instead falls in love, Cam discovers it’s his own shattered spirit that needs mending.

Sunshine’s “flaw” is that he has a personality and free will, traits that interfere with his role as the perfect, obedient worker. They also make him smart, sweet, and sexy as hell. Sunshine is determined to pursue a relationship with Cam, no matter what it takes. No penis? No problem! He’s made of malleum, and he can modify his anatomy to meet Cam’s deepest desires. The hard part is getting Cam to admit what he really wants.

Meanwhile, Cam’s boss expects him to complete repairs on the new worker prototype. It’ll be the mines for Cam and the scrap heap for Sunshine unless they can outwit a corporation founded on slavery and prove that even in the most unexpected places, love flourishes, transforming not just one wounded man, but also a whole world.

Cam: You know, I’m not sure we’re doing a very good job with this blog tour thing.

Sunshine: Really? I’m having fun. The readers seem to be having fun.

Cam: Yes, but are we really showing anyone what our book is actually about? All you do is talk about your penis and embarrass me with details of our private life.

Sunshine: Private life? Um. You do realize you’re a character in an erotic romance novel, right?

Cam: What?

Sunshine: Uh-oh.

Cam: You mean every time we… People are watching?

Sunshine: Reading would be more accurate. And we’d better hope they are. Books are made to be read and characters only live in readers imaginations.

Cam: …

Sunshine: Oh sweetheart. Come here. (Sunshine hugs Cam.) It’s okay. Look at it this way, no matter what happens in the real world, we’ll always be together.

Cam: Always?

Sunshine: Always.

Cam: (deep sigh) I guess that’s all right then.

Sunshine: (smiles) So what do you think, want to share another excerpt now?

Cam: Yeah, only this time I get to pick it out.

Excerpt:

Cam never tired of the desert, especially at dawn and at dusk. When Halde first brought him to Dran and told him he could stay as long as he kept doing useful work for Zenesco, he’d been numb with wonder. He spent the first month sleeping out under the sky while he renovated the rest of the abandoned auto repair garage to make his workshop and living quarters.

Now, the sky was starting to turn blue. The tan earth was ghostly in the predawn light. “The sun will be up soon,” he told SNSH1.9.

“So this is the surface of the moon. A…desert, you said.”

“That’s right,” said Cam.

“That means a barren land—a place without life. But we’re here.”

Cam smiled. “That’s true.”

“I like it. I find it beautiful.”

“I love it.” Cam’s voice was thick.

“Why do you love it?”

He thought of dark, cramped spaces and cold rock walls. “Because half of it is sky.”

At that moment the sun crested the horizona sliver of fire that rapidly grew to a golden dome.

“What is that?” asked SNSH1.9.

“The sun of this planetary system. It’s a star named Mineon.”

They were both silent a moment as Mineon rose.

“I still haven’t decided on a name,” said the android, “but I know I want to be a ‘he,’ like you.”

“Well, you’re made to resemble a male, so that’s convenient. Just make sure you pick something you like.”

“At first I thought I should name myself after what I love, but it would be confusing if we were both named Cam, wouldn’t it?”

Cam told himself it was the light of the rising sun that made his eyes sting and water. “Yeah.”

Light bathed them both as the big orange ball ascended.

The android lifted his hands to the sun, as if to warm them at a fire. “This feels wonderful. Does it feel like this to you?”

“Probably not. But it feels good. Warm. For you, it’s probably even better because the sunshine is replenishing your energy reservoir. I designed these solar receptor systems to give positive feedback.”

“Thank you.” SNSH1.9 faced the rising sun, his arms outstretched, his head thrown back. He gasped. “It gets even better! This is the opposite of what recharging used to be like.”

It took Cam a moment to find his voice. “This is how it should feel.”

The android’s grin was like the crescent of Kalifax setting behind them. “Sunshine. That’s what I want my name to be.”

“That’s great.”

“You like it?”

Cam soaked in the warmth of the new day. “Yeah. I think Sunshine is the perfect name for you.”

“You do?”

Cam’s throat felt congested. His eyes stung. Shit. Was he crying? He looked away. “Yeah.”

Sunshine touched his shoulder. “You’re upset. What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know. Nothing, maybe.” Maybe something was right instead. Something bizarre, unexpected, and wonderful. A friend. Could it be?
