A Pinnacle of Balls — Get Ready! #TaraLain #BallstotheWall

Hi – -If you’ve read any of the Balls books, heard about them, or considered reading them, listen up. A highpoint is coming for the beautiful boys ofLaguna Beach. You may know that i wrote the first book in this series, Volley Balls, in 2011. I never thought of it as the first book in its own series. In fact, it was written as a book in a multi-author series for my publisher at the time. It did well, but it was the existence of a fantastic character who readers loved — Rodney Mansfield — that actually persuaded me to write book 2, Fire Balls. Fire Balls was one of the top sellers in gay romance in 2012 and a series was born. Beach Balls came next and then Snow Balls, both in 2012. Snow Balls was also a huge bestseller, so i went on to write FAST Balls in 2013. FAST Balls was Jerry’s story, another favorite reader character, and that felt like the end of the series. Fans have continued to read the books and ask about them, but i moved on to other series and other characters.

Then this year, my publisher Dreamspinner Press, contracted the re-release of the 5 book series and i got inspired to write some more Balls books and to go back and rewrite the old ones where i felt it was needed. It’s been a fun year. Starting in January 2017 through this month, the whole series has re-released. Volley Balls was completely rewritten to include more of the romance between Edge with David and Gareth. Fire Balls wasn’t changed a lot since its so much a favorite, but i added quite a few more scenes to Beach Balls and FAST Balls. Then this past October, I released a brand new book in the series — High Balls.  I had so much fun writing High Balls I decided to tell another Balls story, the book about the twins, Robin and Bobby. That book is called Bleu Balls and it comes out in January, after Snow Balls re-releases this week with new scenes. Bleu Balls is the first full length novel in the series.

I have to say that JJ in Snow Balls is a favorite character of mine Release is only a couple days away and you can now buy it at AMAZON.

So anyone who hasn’t read the series can in fact start anywhere and read all the books (7) if they want to as of next month. Big Balls fans have new books to keep them smiling. Will there be more Balls books? We’ll see. Those boys are always hollering for more stories. Have any faves you want to have happily ever aftered?

B is for BALLS! #BallstotheWall #VolleyBalls #FireBalls

volleyballs400x600Hi! Welcome to our spelling lesson. B is for Balls!

If you’ve read my books at all, you may know that the series for which i was first known was my Balls to the Wall series. People used to call me the Balls girl! These books were my first stories to be set in Laguna Beach, CA. and they were my first bestsellers. But for those who may have just heard of my novels, you might not have been able to buy this series. Most of the books have been off the market for the better part of a year. That’s about to change!

On June 11th, I’ll be re-releasing the first book in the series, Volley Balls. This was a story i always felt was too short and didn’t explore the full potential of the relationship between 3 — yes 3!  –hot men. So i have rewritten Volley Balls and almost doubled its original length. For those who have read it, and that’s a lot of people, you’ll find this is a whole new take on the story.

The best known book in the series is Fire Balls, the story of feisty artist Rodney Mansfield and his seemingly hopeless love for firefighter Hunter Fallon. I’m happy to say that you’ll get to see the new cover for Fire Balls in just two  days, on Jan. 6th. You can pre-order the book then and it will release on Feb 8th.

All the rest of the books will also release this year — Beach Balls, FAST Balls, and Snow Balls. PLUS, there will be two NEW additions to the series — High Balls and Bleu Balls  — that will release at the end of this year and the beginning of 2018.

Whether you’re new to my Balls books or an old timer, i hope you enjoy these re-releases and new releases! These are a great bunch of guys who inspired me to write my Love in Laguna series as well. I’ll unveil Fire Balls for you soon!

Excerpts

Gareth shifted uneasily in the darkened amphitheater.
Another scene change. The effects were lovely and sometimes awe-inspiring, but
he’d gotten the idea in the first half hour. He was ready to go.
He glanced to his left at Edge, who seemed fascinated with
the show. Intriguing, since Edge had the attention span of a gnat. The other
guys were more restless, jabbing each other when the bare-breasted art pieces
appeared, but they managed to stay on the near side of rude.
He settled back for the duration. Maybe a little catnap. The
lights came up as he started to close his eyes. He heard an indrawn breath and
looked up. Holy, bloody, everlasting
hell.
In the center of the vast stage, on a rotating platform in a
single perfect spotlight, was David, the masterwork of Michelangelo. Gareth had
seen it in Florence several times, and every sense he had told him he was
looking at the actual statue, although his mind knew this was a human being.
Glowing, luminous, absolutely still… sweet bloody Christ, how could someone do
it? How could they have found a person so perfect?
He noticed a deep stillness in the audience and also among
his mates. Edge was absolutely motionless. Unusual for him. But the statue, the
guy, was just that beautiful.
Gareth cocked his head. The model’s legs were not as big and
muscular as the Michelangelo. This “statue” was a bit leaner and even more
graceful. The pedestal kept turning. He squinted. Bloody hell, he’d seen that
perfect ass before. He peered into the pool of light as the David rotated. He’d
seen those amazing cheekbones.

It was the guy from the beach and the shop. Gareth rifled
through his program for the name. David Underwood. The one who owned the
gallery. The fag. Gareth shifted onto
his hip, leaning away from Edge. Wouldn’t do to let his pouf-hating friend see
his massive erection.

As he approached the gallery, a figure stepped away from the
building. He sucked wind, stopped, and slapped a hand over his heart. Shit. Not Phil. Not Phil. He swallowed hard.
The Aussie stepped closer. “Sorry to scare you. Are you
okay?”
Couldn’t quite catch his breath. He nodded, but his inhale sounded
in his ears.
“Jesus, I’m sorry, David. I keep fucking this up. I should
just leave you alone like you asked me.” He shook his head, turned, and started
walking away down Forest.
“Wait!” Shit, did he just say that?
The guy stopped and turned. “Yeh?” The word turned up on the
end—hopefully.
“I have to give you points for not giving up. After me being
such a shit and all.”
“I deserved it. I just—” He shrugged. “—don’t have much
experience. None with guys, you know? I’m pretty bad at it.”
“You guarantee you’re not an ax murderer?”
The guy’s perfect lips in his perfect face turned up. “Do
American ax murderers admit their profession? Must make policing damned easy.”
“Yep. All the cops are busy eating donuts as we speak.”
“So no, I’m not an ax murderer.” His face sobered. “Or
anyone who means you harm.” He extended his hand. “Hello. I’m Gareth Marshall.”
David shook his hand. Big. Very callused. Very warm. “Okay,
Gareth.” David crossed his arms. “What’s a nice guy like you doing with a
homophobic asshole like that big blond?”
All kinds of emotions flashed across his face—anger, hurt,
and embarrassment seemed uppermost. “He’s my volleyball partner.” He took a
breath. “And actually my best friend.”
David frowned. “So he harasses every other gay guy, but not
you?”
“He doesn’t know I’m gay.”
“Uh, sorry to tell you, but in the dictionary where it says
‘best friend,’ it says ‘guy who you tell all your secrets to.’”
“I know. But we’ve been friends since we were kids. He
thinks he knows everything about me.”
“He’s missed a few sucked cocks, I gather.”
Gareth did that shrug thing. “A few.”
“So where do we go from here?”
He flashed a slightly saucy smile. “Where do you want to go,
mate?”
“You’re the one lurking in doorways.”

Title Magic! How Tara Lain Names Her Books

VolleyBalls_ByTaraLain-800x1200Hi and welcome!

One of the things readers ask me about a lot is creating titles. Writers tend to either love or hate titles and I fall into the former category. You may know that in my day job I own an advertising and PR agency and I think of title creation a lot like writing an ad headline. It needs to point to the essence of the story while attracting and intriguing. In face, titles are so important to me that I seldom write much of a book before I have the title. Just as an ad could never be created without having the headline first, I have trouble writing a book until I know the title. It guides the story. On occasion, though not often, the title comes before the story.

A lot of people have read my popular Balls to the Wall series. The first book in the series, Volley Balls, was FireBalls_ByTaraLain-800x1200originally called David and Goliath. But i didn’t want to offend anyone, so a short way into the book i thought, hey, my heroes are volleyball players. Why not call it Volley Balls. I didn’t realize i was starting a franchise — and a naming convention people would love. A character in the first book — Rodney– needed  his own story. I thought about him and realized he was a real firecracker. A Fire Ball! And the story became Fire Balls. BUT, i didn’t have my second hero figured out. It was the title that suggested he should be a firefighter. I started playing with all the words that logically went with Balls. Beach Balls suggested the story of scuba divers who meet (and do a lot of other stuff) under water. Snow Balls became a winter story with my heroes going skiing. The titles preceded the books.

Winter's_Wolf_FinalWith all that said, I had a problem with the title of Winter’s Wolf. I originally called the book The Wolf Who Came Back. I liked the title, but the problem was that the wolf who comes back in the story is not my hero, it’s his father. When I mentioned this to my beta readers, they agreed that the title was misleading. I told them that I had been playing around with the hero’s name, Winter. One of my beta readers suggested Winter Wolf, which I agreed was wonderful, but there were already many books with that title. That’s when lightning struck. I went back to her and said, “What do you think of Winter’s Wolf?” She loved it! And so did all the other beta readers. The reason for that all-important apostrophe will be evident when you read the book. I hope you enjoy Winter’s Wolf!

On April 1st, we’ll be revealing the cover for my upcoming release, KNIGHT OF OCEAN AVENUE. This was a book that got its name as i wrote. I’d played with a couple titles i didn’t like, but i couldn’t find the books real title. Then, my one hero calls the other his knight! Bingo. Since the story takes place in Laguna Beach and Ocean Avenue is a real street in Laguna, the title leaped in front of my eyes. That title led me to the names for the other books in the series — Knave of Broken Hearts (which releases August 3rd) and Prince of the Playhouse which comes out in 2016.

That’s a little about Title Magic. Thank you for coming by!

The Truth About Volley Balls!

VolleyBalls_ByTaraLain-453x680Hi! Today i’m discussing Balls. My Balls books that is. People ask, so i want to say a few things about these popular gay romances.

First, F.A.S.T. Balls releases on September 20th! It’s the story of Jerry Wallender from Fire Balls. This is his HEA and the story is a little unexpected. Lots more about that in a few days.

My other topic is Volley Balls. The other day, someone who had read my free story, LOVE YOU SO HARD (you can get it FREE at ARe) posted a review of Volley Balls. She said while she loved the free book, she didn’t like Volley Balls because the ending was so rushed and the story was too short. While i’m pretty sure this person will never read my blog, i still want to say i understand. I know that Volley Balls is the favorite Tara Lain book of many readers, and i know that they love it because of the story and the characters and make allowances for the fast ending. I appreciate that! LOL. This book also launched one of the most popular gay romance series of the last few years. I appreciate that too!

Volley Balls was written to a very tight word count because it was supposed to be in an anthology. It ended up being in a different anthology (Balls to the Wall) but no one knew it at the time. It was only my third book i’d ever written and also the first novella i’d written. I didn’t know that i probably could have asked for a longer word count and gotten it.

I originally wrote the book with only a hint at the end that the three men might get together. There was no love scene at all. The editor rightfully asked for the scene to be inserted so i did — but it does leave the reader hanging a bit. A man who has been a homophobe all his life isn’t going to switch teams with no repercussions (as you’ll see in F.A.S.T. Balls). So someday, whenever i get the chance to expand Volley Balls, i very likely will do that. Maybe i’ll restructure the book a bit without hurting the parts that people love so much and expand Edge’s role in the menage. Meanwhile, to all those who love Volley Balls, thank you so much! I like the story and those characters too! To those who find the ending disappointing, i understand. Someday, i’ll make my Balls bigger!  : )

Love in Laguna Beach

Laguna_Beach_BuchtHi everyone–

This past weekend, the summer Art Festivals opened in Laguna Beach, CA, the official start of summer in my home town. Even though “June gloom” still prevails with fog cooling off the heat a lot of the mornings, the tourists pour into the town preparing for the Fourth of July fireworks and a huge helping of arts and crafts.

As you may know, i set a lot of my romance novels in Laguna — more than half — and these summertrolley events remind me of scenes that i’ve created. Like the real official icon of summer is the Laguna trolley. These open air vehicles transport people around the town all summer for free — which is essential since parking is impossible. I set a scene in Golden Dancer on the trolley where my billionaire art collector, Daniel, takes the beautiful ballet dancer, Trelain Medveyev, on a trolley trip to go to brunch at a favorite Laguna Mexican restaurant. All the tourists are staring at the gorgeous dancer — as is Daniel.

Volley Balls was the first book i set in Laguna Beach. In it, my hero David, poses nude as the statue of David in the famous Pageant of the Masters. The Pageant replicates works of art using real people. It’s an extraordinary thing to see. Even when you watch the “sample” where the people get into place in the frames in front of your eyes, you still can’t believe that the works of art are human! The people who pose nude are a special pageant-of-the-mastersbreed in the Pageant.

The Pageant actually takes place on the grounds of the Festival of the Arts which is a juried art show at which my hero, Rodney, from Fire Balls is an exhibitor. The Festival is where Rodney beats up Mick. The Sawdust Festival is the wildly popular arts and crafts show that features artists only from Laguna Beach. In the winter, the Sawdust grounds hold the Winter Festival and that’s the setting for Snow Balls, where JJ meets the tough cop, Ryan Star.

CrystalCove9-1-08-150.jpg.w560h423The beaches of Laguna are the biggest draw to the town, of course, and i’ve set many scenes on the beach. David first sees the men who will become his lovers, the handsome volleyball players, Gareth and Edge, on Main Beach. In Golden Dancer, Daniel and Trelain walk on the beach holding hands since Laguna is very gay friendly, and in Hearts and Flour, my heroes take a walk to one of the the gay beaches where the beautiful boys gather. An amazing beach called Crystal Cove is the setting for several scenes in Beach Balls. On the north end of Laguna, Crystal Cove is isolated and like a step back in time. Its beautiful curved beach is a favorite of artists. My heroes get into a lot of hanky-panky on that beach.

Altogether, i’m a lucky author to have such a fun and action-packed setting for my books. Some of my readers have come to visit Laguna just because of reading my stories. I hope you all find romance here! : )
