Fool of Main Beach
(Love of Laguna Series, Bk #5)
by Tara Lain

Blurb:
Merle Justice wants to reach for the stars, but it’s tough to get respect when playing a teenybopper vampire on TV. Then he meets a famous director anxious to give him all he thinks he wants—and maybe a bit more. Everything’s looking up until a life-threatening encounter with some homophobes on Main Beach puts Merle face-to-face with a Sasquatch-sized hero in a pink puffer coat.
Tom Henry defies description. As unsophisticated and simple as an angel, he walks through life content with who he is and asking for very little except to care for his sister, Lily, and the dogs he loves. Then he meets Merle, the embodiment of dreams he barely knows he has. Merle knows the people who hold his future in their hands might love Tom—but they’ll never understand Merle and Tom together. Tom knows it too. With lives this far apart, who’s really the fool of Main Beach?

Excerpts

White bursts of light flashed in front of his eyes and a
river of burning bile filled his mouth, oozing around the pressure of the big
asshole’s arm on his neck. Damn. Damn.
Who the fuck wants to die on the beach in a tuxedo?
Merle staggered backward as the brother tightened his
grip and the other sibling from hell moved in to do more damage. Brother One
pulled back a fist—and suddenly flew through the air, practically knocking
Merle and his captor off their feet.
Standing behind where Brother One had stood
was—Sasquatch. It had to be—this huge man, easily six foot six, dressed in what
might be a pink puffer jacket, with a shock of curly, dark hair flying around
his face. He stopped his forward momentum and snapped a fist at Ritchie, who
was staggering back to join the fray. Only the smallest interface between that
huge hand and Ritchie’s chin signaled bye-bye,
Ritchie
. The dude staggered back and fell on his ass. Merle would have
cheered if his neck wasn’t breaking. Sweet Face held up his hands, and
Sasquatch nodded with a smile more appropriate to a kindergarten class than a beach
brawl.
Then the giant turned to Brother Two, who still held his
arm painfully around Merle’s throat. Brother hissed in Merle’s ear, “Don’t come
any closer or I’ll break his neck.”
Sasquatch cocked his head and gave that weird smile
again. Is the guy nuts? “It’s very
hard to break a person’s neck, did you know that?” He walked slowly forward.
“You don’t want to hurt him.”
The arm around Merle’s neck trembled and tightened
convulsively. Merle made a gagging sound.
Sasquatch frowned, an oddity on what appeared to be a
young, pretty face. “It will be very bad for you if you hurt him, you know? But
if you let him go, I won’t hurt you.” He looked over his shoulder. “See. Your
friends ran away already.”
Sure enough. They’d melted into the dark the second they got
the chance.
“You should go too.” Sasquatch stepped forward again. “Go
now.”
Brother Two released Merle and ran like a rabbit toward
the water as Merle collapsed onto the damp sand. “I hope you fucking drown.” He
rubbed his neck and tried to get a full breath into his lungs.
The big man knelt down beside Merle.
Merle glanced up. Yes, on closer inspection the face
might have been a choirboy’s—on the body of the Jolly Green Giant.
The big man bobbed his head. “You’re okay, right?”
“Yeah. I think so.”
“How can we know?”
Merle almost laughed. “Uh, I guess you can help me up,
and we’ll check it out.”
“Okay.” The giant reached down, grasped Merle at the
waist, and whoa—sent him flying to
his feet. This time Merle did laugh. “Was that fun?” The big man smiled, and
huge dimples popped out in his cherub face.
“Yeah. Thanks.”
“I could do it again. I like lifting you.”
“No, that’s okay.” Funny how that gave him a little flip
in the stomach. He rotated his neck very gently. “I think I’m okay. How does my
tux look?” He stepped back and wiped sand from his butt.
“Tux?”
“Oh, my clothes.”
“Good. Really pretty.”
“Thanks. A friend designed the clothes for me, and I’d
hate for those assholes to ruin them.”
“Yes. That would be bad. Disappointing.”
“Yes, it would.”
“Friends are good.”
Merle stuck out his hand. “I’m Merle Justice, and I’m
extremely grateful to you. I think you might have saved my life.”
The big man looked at Merle’s hand for a minute, then
grinned and shook it enthusiastically. “I’m happy to save your life.”

Merle stretched out the measuring tape and got the
dimensions of the huge family space, then paced it off into dining and living
areas. Once he had enough measurements to buy rugs, he wandered past the big
island into the kitchen and opened each cabinet. His mind filled in the spaces
with dishes and pots and pans—yeah, a lot of stuff he didn’t have. His current
apartment in Santa Monica was still a transition space from starving-actor digs
to TV-star quarters. TV star? He snorted softly. More like vampire of the
month. Of course, he’d been lucky enough to be vampire of the month for two
years.
I’m killing time.
Go down to Ru’s studio and take him to lunch.
“Want part of my sandwich, Merle?”
He looked up into the truly pretty face smiling at him
from the other side of the island. “I don’t want to take your lunch, Tom. I’ll
go get some.”
“It’s okay. I made two sandwiches, so there’s lots.”
I should go, but—“Sure,
I’d love half of your sandwich. What kind is it?”
“I’ve got peanut butter and I’ve got avocado and cheese.”
“Which kind do you like best?”
“I like them both.”
“I’ll take avocado.” He looked around the big room still
covered in drywall dust, nails, and wood shavings. “Where shall we sit?”
Tom made a waggling motion with his finger.
Merle cocked his head and walked around the island to
where Tom stood, towering over him. Suddenly he was flying through the air and
made a little gasping sound as Tom sat him on top of the island, then grinned
and easily hopped up beside him. Merle laughed. “No fair.”
“Oh, didn’t you like it?” Tom looked serious.
“I’m teasing you. I just meant it’s funny that you’re so
much bigger than me.”
He shrugged. “I’m much bigger than anybody—except Billy.
I’m just a little bigger than him.” He handed over his half sandwich. It was on
some kind of multigrain bread and appeared to have cheese that wasn’t American.
“This looks delicious.”
“Mrs. Allison taught me to make it.”
“Who’s that?” He took a bite and was very happy he did.
“The lady I live with.”
“Oh, you live with a lady?” Duh, Merle.
“She owns the house, and I rent a room from her.” He
chewed his peanut butter, which also looked like it might have some organic
roots. “I help her with stuff, and she helps me too. Like teaching me about
food and water and how to feed the boys.”
“Boys?”
“My dogs.”
“How many dogs?”
“Two. Fluffy and Tigger. I got them from the shelter where
I work sometimes.”
“Most landladies don’t let you have dogs.”
“Mrs. A. is really nice. She doesn’t want me to have big
dogs, though. Wish I could.” He chewed thoughtfully.
“You could probably get an apartment or house with enough
space for bigger dogs if you want them.”
He shook his head matter-of-factly. “No. Can’t afford
it.”
“I guess rentals in Laguna are pretty high.”
“Yeah, but Billy pays me good. I just need the money for
my folks to take care of Lily.”
“Your sister.”
“Right.” He grinned like he was happy Merle knew her
name. They chewed companionably. “You’re on TV, right?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t see TV much, but I’m going to watch this week.
Mrs. Allison said I can.”
Why did his saying things like that wring Merle’s heart?
“Do you like movies?”
“Oh yes. I go to movies sometimes.”
“What kind do you like?”
“All kinds. Except the ones with the words. I’m not so
good at that.”
Merle’s glance snapped to Tom’s face, but Tom didn’t seem
to be complaining or confessing. Just stating a fact. “Do you have trouble reading?”
He tried to ask it with great nonchalance.
“Yes. That’s how Billy and I got to be friends. He
doesn’t read so good either.” He grinned. “But we’re better now.”
“May I ask you a personal question? You don’t have to
tell me.”
“Sure, Merle. You’re my friend.”
Again, that thump on his heart. “I know you passed the
electrician’s exam. Billy tells me that’s really hard. If you have trouble
reading, how were you able to do it?”
“Mrs. A. read it to me.”
He looked up from licking his fingers clean of avocado.
“What?”
“I gave her the tests that were like samples, and she
read them to me. And she read all the handbooks too. Then a nice guy named Burt
read me the questions on the test, and I said the answers out loud.”
“So you learned everything when Mrs., uh, A. read it to
you?”
“Um-hm. I remember really good.” He finished the last
bite of his avocado. “Most people don’t, you know?”
Merle grinned. “Yes, I do know.”
“Do you like being on TV?”
“Yes. It’s a good job. Long hours, but I get time off
sometimes. Like now.” Funny. He wanted to tell Tom. “I might have a chance to
make a movie.”
Tom’s whole face lit up. “That would be really good,
right? Would you like that?”
“Yes, it’d be a step up in my career. And the guy
directing the movie is very well-known and respected.” He glanced over. Did Tom
have the slightest idea what he just said?
“Do you like him?”
Merle smiled. Leave it to Tom to get to the heart of the
matter.

Tara Lain’s Favorite Heroes #gayheroes #LGBT

Hi —

I recently was asked by USA Today which hero i most enjoyed writing. I said that was an unfair question because it was like asking which child is your favorite. Ultimately, I selected Billy Ballew in Knight of Ocean Avenue because that was a book that had to be told and practically wrote itself. It’s also the number one favorite book of all my readers, so i imagine a lot of people would agree with my choice. But if i investigate my total body of work — currently almost 40 books — the answer to that question is a bit more complicated. I have a number of favorite heroes for various reasons. Billy is certainly one of them. Here are a few more in no particular order —

Paris Marketo in The Pack or the Panther — Paris is a hero you either love or hate and a lot of my readers do both. Why? Because Paris is a Panther Shifter and is in every way a cat — self-centered, solitary, snarky, and suspicious. I’ve found that readers who don’t like cats, don’t like Paris and vice versa. I adore him but then i love cats. The real gift of the character is that, like a cat, if Paris ultimately gives you his trust and his love, you’ve received a gift of inestimable value.

Raven Nez in Tackling the Tight End — This is actually one of my favorite books. It explores the Native tradition of the two spirit and my hero, Raven, is someone who has internalized that idea since childhood. As a result, he’s able to see being gay as not just okay and acceptable, but actually a gift — something given as a unique blessing to the world. I loved writing this books and this hero.

Rodney Mansfield in Fire Balls — This is one of my most popular books and characters — the tiny, feisty fireball of a guy who may look like a queen but he’s a badass in a fight — and in bed. Rodney popped up in my first Balls book, Volley Balls, as the best friend to my hero. He himself was the least likely of heroes and so, of course, is one of the best.

Roan Black in the Scientist and the Supermodel and Genetic Attraction — Unfortunately, these early books of mine are not currently available (i have to get them self-published and back on the market) , but i have to mention that they contain one of my favorite heroes of all time — Roan Black, the supermodel. Roan was in essence my first hero — these books are the first two romances i ever wrote — and he embodies all of my romantic fantasies. I hope to get him back into your hands this year.

Snowden Reynaldi in Driven Snow — Snow is a khaki-clad, chess-playing physicist nerd who loves the golden quarterback of his college. He’s brilliant, awkward and shy and has his own internal dialogues. He was a blast to write and remains a fave of mine.

Funny huh? In most cases, these aren’t even my most popular books, but the characters have managed to capture my heart. I also love Ian Carney in Lord of a Thousand Steps, Winter Thane in Winter’s Wolf,  Jamal Jones in Canning the Center and Tom Henry, the hero of my upcoming book, Fool of Main Beach. But then, i pretty much adore all my heroes. It’s very hard to choose.

Knight of Ocean Avenue in Italian! Released! #gayromance #bestseller

Hi — Do you read in Italian or know someone who does? I’m excited to say that my novel Knight of Ocean Avenue has been translated into Italian and is now available as Il Cavaliere di Ocean Avenue (Storie d’amore a Laguna Vol. 1)

I’m equally happy to say that as i’m writing this, the book is #470 in the Italian Kindle store and #206 in Romance. It’s only been released a few hours so this is very encouraging.

Here’s the link to Italian Amazon  and to the book on US Amazon

I have a lot of translated books including Knight, which is currently available in French, German and Italian as well as English. If you’d like to know the translation status for any of my books, just post a comment. :  )

Today is National Cat Day! Meeeeow! Spell Cat is Coming!

aloysius2Hi — Happy National Cat Day! While it’s very true that i have a dog and no cat — spellcat400x600because my poor honey is deeply allergic to kitties — I’m still a mad cat fan. If you read my books, you know i write a ton of cats and on Halloween (Monday) i’m releasing the first of a three-book series that has a truly bad ass cat as one of the main characters. His name is Aloysius and he’s actually a witch’s familiar who looks like a blue-eyed black cat. He isn’t a talking cat — but you still get a very solid impression of his personality.

My most popular contemporary novel, Knight of Ocean Avenue, has two fabulous cats, Clancy and Yerby, who my hero Billy calls his gay cats. One is orange and one is black, so Billy says they curl together in perpetual Halloween. In my newest novel, Lord of a Thousand Steps, the huge white cat, Anderson Cooper, is an amazing character who propels a lot of the action.

PackorthePanther[The]LGOne of my favorite cat characters is panther shifter, Paris Marketo, in The Pack or the Panther. In his human form, Paris is so catlike that people who don’t like cats often don’t like him. They call him independent and selfish. Hmm. does that sound like a cat you know?

So happy National Cat Day, my friends! Here are some wonder kitties for your celebration!  (And if you’d like to pre-order Spell Cat, you can get it HERE and you’ll be reading it on Halloween!) Lord of a Thousand Steps
(Love in Laguna #4)
By Tara Lain
Blurb:

To architecture student Ian Carney, family means everything. Taken in by his brother, Jim, when his father threw him out at eighteen for being gay, Ian yearns to create his own family with his boyfriend, Rico. But Rico’s in Mexico caring for a sick father, Ian hasn’t had sex in a month and a half, and his gorgeous boss, Braden Lord, CEO of the architectural firm Ian interns for, is looking better and better.

Braden’s life is chaos. Just out of the closet and going through an ugly divorce from his wife of fifteen years who’s trying to take custody of his two children, he desperately resolves not to succumb to a completely inappropriate attraction to Ian—even though his kids adore both the man and his crazy cat.

When Rico proves to be a snake in the grass and Ian exercises his powers of seduction, what starts as a “friends with benefits” fling turns into real life real fast. Can Ian give up his romantic dreams for an “old guy” who didn’t come out until he carried a mountain of baggage? It’ll only take a thousand steps.

Excerpts

“Daddy! Daddy! Look at the kitty.”
The high-pitched squeal cut through Ian’s foggy brain.
Anderson shifted on his belly, then started to vibrate.
Ian opened an eye and met two gigantic blue ones only a
couple of feet away. The little girl squatted down beside him on the sand in
her Frozen bathing suit, gently
petting Anderson’s head and getting the motorcycle response. Ian grinned. “Hi.”
She eyed him with a grain of suspicion, but the allure of
the purr proved too great and she kept petting. “Hello. What’s his name?”
“Anderson.”
“That’s a most unusual name for a cat.”
He snorted, and one of her little brows rose in an
expression so far beyond her years—which appeared to be somewhere around five
or six—that Ian almost snorted again. Almost. One didn’t face such disdain
lightly. “Yes. I suppose it is. Have you ever heard of Anderson Cooper?”
“Uh, I believe so.” She raised her head, looking behind Ian,
and said, “Have I heard of Anderson Cooper, Daddy?”
Daddy? Okay, he
hadn’t moved so as not to disturb the petting frenzy. Now he scrambled to
sitting, getting a yowl from Anderson, and looked behind him. Well, holy shit.
Braden Lord leaned against the rocks, one hip cocked
slightly, and Ian knew that because he wore very little on those hips. Just a
pair of slim-fitting board shorts that cupped an ass on its way to legend and
thighs Ian could only imagine in X-rated postures.
“Hi. I mean, I didn’t see you there. Sorry.” Ian brushed
sand from his legs and tried to find some moderately respectable posture that
wouldn’t show his half-masted cock.
“Providing a resting place for fifty-pound felines does tend
to keep you in one place.” Lord laughed. “Don’t see mountain lions much on the
beach.”
“Never know when you might need protection from small angels
in Frozen bathing suits.”
The little girl had flopped on her butt and now proceeded to
pile sand on top of Anderson, who cooperated by stretching to his full, massive
length. She gave Ian that eyebrow again. “Are you referring to me?”
Best sidestep that
one.
Ian extended a hand. “How do you do. I’m Ian Carney. I work for your—”
He glanced up at Braden. “—daddy.”
She took his hand and shook it seriously. “I’m Mireille
Lord. And I really like your cat.”
“What a pretty name.” It sounded like Mir-ray. “I’m sure
Anderson likes it too.”
“Thank you. My daddy picked it out.” She glanced up at
Braden as she piled more sand on the cat. “Have I heard of Anderson Cooper, Daddy?”
Braden replied very seriously, “He’s a news reporter,
Mireille. You might remember him because his hair is the same color as the
kitty.”

“I see.” She gave Ian an approving grin. “How very clever of
you.”

Braden picked up his glass and turned it in his hands. He’d
been the recipient of a rebound blowjob. He slowly released his breath. Better than no blowjob at all, I guess.
“I’m so sorry this happened to you.”
“Yeah. Well, maybe it’ll help me grow up and stop looking
for romance on every street corner, you know? Just about the time I moved in
with my brother, he fell for Ken, and I think that warped my perspective.
They’re so happy. But I guess I haven’t kissed enough frogs yet.”
Braden sucked wine up his nose and gargled. “Mmft, I shall
cherish my new amphibian category.” Although it kind of stung.
“Oh, hell no. That’s not what I meant.” He shook his head
wildly. “Actually, you’re the antiamphibian.”
Braden laughed. “Okay, explain.”
“I mean, you’re the shoot-for-the-moon guy. The prince’s
prince. But you’re so far out of my league, you won’t tempt me to hope.” He
grinned. “I can be your secret blowjob guy, your fuck buddy, while you’re getting
yourself out of your marriage. You won’t have to worry about some random spy
photographer catching you in the throes with me. Hell, if they see us together,
you have a perfect reason to be with me. Combination design mentee and babysitter.”
Braden’s head spun. This made weird sense—and gave him a
bellyache. “What do you get out of it?”
“Are you kidding? Sex with the hottest dude on two feet—and
a break from fairy-tale romance.”
His mouth opened—and closed. Try again. “Uh, are you sure about this?”
Ian’s grin faded. “Okay, I’m more beat-up than I’m letting
on. But I really like you. If we go into this with eyes open and solemnly
promise that when one of us finds a realistic boyfriend we can still work
together, then I’m in. But seriously, I don’t want to jeopardize my job. I love
working for Lord and Kendrick. If you think I’m kidding myself, say so.”

Kidding? Fuck, they’d both lost their minds.

As an author, one of the hardest challenges is creating interesting and meaningful villains. That’s why i have great respect for these Top 10 Smartest Villains.

Since I’m a romance writer and want to focus on the love between my two main characters, the villains can so easily get less energy. Many of my books don’t have actual “bad guys”, but rather use emotional or circumstantial obstacles as the forces that keep my heroes apart. Knight of Ocean Avenue has some nasty people in it, butKnaveofBrokenHearts-400x600 no true villains. Knave of Broken Hearts, however, has Jim’s father as a pretty awful guy who creates a lot of angst in Jim’s life.

Two of my (I think) best villains were sufficiently smart and evil that they actually kept me from writing the book for almost a year — the parents of Dennis in Tackling the Tight End. These two are weird, quirky, not easily fooled and thoroughly despicable. Actually, that series produced some other pretty bad villains too like the team owner in Canning the Center. Recently, i finished writing a book that has a true villain — a serial killer — in Death Dancer. You’ll get to read that book either late in 2016 or early 2017.

With all that in mind, here’s a video of the Top 10 Smartest Villains for your consideration. I think this is a pretty good list. Do you agree?
