Hi and welcome. It’s my delight to announce the release of my new Pennymaker Tale, Never. If you’re not familiar with The Pennymaker Tales, they are all inspired by the tropes of popular fairy tales and stories. As such, they all stand alone, but they’re united by one continuing character — the mysterious Mr. Pennymaker. Writing a contemporary gay romance based on Peter Pan proved to be a fun and unique challenge. I hope you love it. Be sure to enter to win on the Rafflecopter!

Never
(The Pennymaker Tales, #4)
By Tara Lain

Blurb:
Wendell “Wen” Darling lives in a world of shoulds and musts. Left to care for his brother and sister by his dull drudge of a father and wacko irresponsible mother, he suppresses his creativity, slaving in an ad agency seventy hours a week, letting his no-talent supervisor take the credit.

Then his bosses blow the campaign for their biggest client and Wen gets a chance to shine—but only if he can find the artist who painted a wild, glorious wall of graffiti in the subway. Hiding behind a pillar at 2:00 a.m., Wen comes face-to-face with the scarlet-haired, elven-faced embodiment of his divergent opposite—Peter Panachek, the flighty, live-for-today painter, singer, and leader of the rock group the Lost Boys. Everything Wen takes seriously, Peter laughs off, but opposites attract, even if their kisses always lead to battles. Peter’s devil-may-care persona hides a world of secrets, self-protection, and hidden fears, until the day a drug dealer, Vadon Hooker, threatens everything Wen holds dear. Guided by the mysterious Mr. Pennymaker, Peter has to choose between facing responsibility or burrowing even deeper into Neverland.

Excerpts

Peter looked up, stood, and John hurled himself into the air.
Peter caught him, although it knocked him back a step or two. As Wen walked up,
Peter and John were laughing.
Wen said, “Hi.” Duh. Wit to
spare.
Peter gave him an unreadable face. “Hi.”
Peter set John’s feet back on the floor, but John took his hand.
“Thanks, man, for saving me.”
A flicker of some kind of pain whipped across his face. “Wen saved
you. I just screwed things up so you got kidnapped.”
John crossed his arms and frowned. “We’re not back there, are we?
Shit happens, Peter.”
Wen sucked in breath to chastise John for the language and laughed
instead. “Yes, it does. You got John in trouble through no fault of your own,
and he shouldn’t have been running off to Neverland at the crack of dawn
anyway. ” He gave John a look. “Then you got him out of it. Our plan wouldn’t
have worked without you.”
Peter shrugged.
Wen slowly inhaled. Am I
doing this?
“There’s something else. I don’t think we work very well
without you either—John and Michaela and, uh, me. I know you’ve got a lot of
decisions to make, but would you throw that into the mix?” He clenched his
hands together and hoped.
Peter stared at him. “You’re kidding. I’m a ne’er-do-well with no
job and no place to live and a demanding family breathing down my neck. You’re
a head of household with kids to raise and taxes to pay and a job where they
don’t appreciate you that you don’t want to lose. How the hell does that work?”
Wen swallowed. “I can’t believe you just used ‘ne’er-do-well’ in a
sentence.”

He sighed loudly as he pulled a green T-shirt over his head with
his back turned to Tink. The T-shirt was just like the others except it
proclaimed in brilliant sparkles Underthrow
the Overground
. He stared in the wavy mirror on the back of the closet
door. She’s right. Wen upsets me. Why the
fuck can’t I stay away from him?
“Let’s just go play music, okay?”
He retraced his steps out the dressing room door and went to drown
himself in lyrics.
Two hours later he knew it wasn’t working. All he could see was
Wen’s face. John’s face. I don’t want to
see them.
He snorted. I don’t want to
want to see them. That’s different
.
When they took their break, Wen walked off the stage straight into
Mr. Pennymaker. Somehow he’d changed to a black jacket with floral collar and
cuffs. Seriously? And somehow he’d
gotten past the guards to hang out backstage. He pressed his hands together.
“Splendid, Peter.”
“You kidding?” Peter frowned. “I can barely get my head out of my
ass.”
“Yes, but sometimes that’s precisely the view we need.”
Peter spewed a laugh. “What do you want with me, really?”
“Why must I want something?”
“Because people don’t usually bother with people unless they want
things.”
He rubbed his chin with two fingers. “All right. I want you to be
happy.”
“Why me, for God’s sake? You don’t even know me.”
He smiled softly. “I want everyone to be happy, Peter. I just
happen to be speaking with you.”
“Jesus!” Peter wiped a hand over the back of his neck. “You’re too
smart for me, old man.”
“Not at all. I simply want you to be smart for you.”
“What does that look like?”
“Getting your head out of your ass and paying attention to what
you want instead of what you think you should want.” He yawned behind his hand.
“I’m a bit tired, so I’ll say good night. Thank all the Lost Boys for such a
splendid show.”
Mr. Pennymaker turned, walked out through the stage door, and was
gone.
Peter’s mouth hung open. Hit
by a five-foot-one-inch truck.

To architecture student Ian Carney, family means everything. Taken in by his brother, Jim, when his father threw him out at eighteen for being gay, Ian yearns to create his own family with his boyfriend, Rico. Braden’s life is chaos. Just out of the closet and going through an ugly divorce from his wife of fifteen years who’s trying to take custody of his two children, he desperately resolves not to succumb to a completely inappropriate attraction to Ian—even though his kids adore both the man and his crazy cat.

When Rico proves to be a snake in the grass and Ian exercises his powers of seduction, what starts as a “friends with benefits” fling turns into real life real fast. Excerpts!

SindersAndAsh-400x600Sinders and Ash

Housekeeper Mark Sintorella (Sinders) works diligently at a resort hotel while designing clothes anonymously, hoping to get into fashion school. Then his carefully planned life is upended with the arrival of Ashford Armitage, son of the fifth richest man in America—and the most beautiful guy Mark has ever seen. Ash must find a wife or he’ll lose his grandfather’s inheritance, and he settles on Bitsy Fanderel. But secretly Ash is gay, and the guy who cleans the fireplaces sets his heart ablaze.

Further stirring the pot is the little elf of a man, Carstairs Pennymaker, who has Mark wearing his own designs and masquerading as a girl to impress the fashion investors in the hotel. When the clock strikes twelve, two beautiful princesses line up for the wedding—but one isn’t a woman. Will the slipper fit? Only Mr. Pennymaker knows for sure

Pennymaker turned and looked at Mark. “What are you working on?”

“Excuse me? I, uh, have to clean some fireplaces this morning. You know they keep the rooms cool just so they can use them? Makes work for me.”

“That’s not what I mean, of course.” Pennymaker turned back to the rack and pushed some jeans aside. “Aha!” His hand shot through the garments to the dress form. He made an opening in the clothes and stepped through to stand beside the red dress. “Perfect. Just beautiful. What a talent.”

“Excuse me?”

Pennymaker beamed at him. “You have exceptional design skills.”

God, it was hard to not be flattered. “Thank you, sir.” But how had Mr. P known to look for the dress? Who’d told him?

Pennymaker walked over to the chair and sat. It creaked. Hopefully the tiny man wouldn’t strain the old wood too much. “I would like to show that dress to some people.”

“Uh, who?”

“Let’s say some potential investors.”

No. He couldn’t get excited. “Really, sir? You’re in the clothing business?”

“I’m in many businesses, my boy.”

Okay, try not to be suspicious. “How did you know I was a clothing designer?”

The little man waved a hand. “That lovely T-shirt, of course.”

“No one told you?”

“Who would tell me?”

Had him there.

Pennymaker stepped back and surveyed the dress. “Now, who is your model?”

What? Mark cocked his head.

“Whom did you set the dress form to?”

“Oh, uh, myself. I, uh, don’t have anyone else. I’m pretty slim, so it works.”

“Perfect. Perfect. When do you have to be at work?”

This conversation was crazy. “In about an hour. This is my morning off. Unless they need me, of course.”

“Good. Put on the dress.”

“What? Why?”

“We’re going for a little walk through the hotel. You’ll be my… niece. Go on, go on.” He made a shooing gesture with his hands.

Mark shook his head. “Sir, I know I fit the dress to me, but that’s because I don’t have anyone else. I’m not a transvestite.”

“Never said you were, dear boy. But these people I want to have see the dress will be much more amenable to taking your designs seriously if they think of the idea themselves rather than me telling them. That’s how we all are, now isn’t it? I want them to see the clothes. We don’t have another model, and we don’t want anyone else in on our secret.”

Secret? “What if someone recognizes me?”

Pennymaker cocked his head. “That’s very unlikely. You do a good job making yourself plain and unmemorable with your cap and glasses.”

Mark felt the blush. Shoot. The man had him dead to rights.

“Besides, people see what they expect, and they certainly don’t expect to see Mark Sintorella in a dress. Now, put it on.”

Mark stepped behind the rack of clothing. He stripped to his boxer briefs and stopped. What the hell was he doing? He could jeopardize his job for this crazyassed little guy with his hairbrained scheme.

The voice came from the other side of the clothes. “Do you have it on?”

“Sir, I don’t mean to be rude, but are you sure about this? I really need the money I get from working here.”

“Tut-tut, my boy. Hurry. I want to make one tour around the lobby and public rooms before you start your shift. Time’s a wastin’.”

Mark pulled the dress over his head and let it fall into place. The skirt was just full enough to swing when he walked, so no one would notice his cock under it. “Uh, I don’t have any boobs.”

“Let me see.”

“See what? What I haven’t got?”

He stepped out.
Pennymaker looked at him studiously. “Gorgeous. You don’t have breasts, but then neither do some women to speak of. I’m more concerned about the hairy legs. Go shave, quickly.”

“What? Sir, I don’t think so….”

“This won’t be your only modeling assignment, I suspect, so think of it as a long-term investment. Consider that brilliant young model who used to walk the catwalks in both male and female shows. You’re at least her equal in beauty.”

“But—”

“No buts. This is your future. Now go!”

“Yes. Judy. My friend. I thought she was coming here.”

“Oh yes. She has her apartment on the ground floor. Mr. Strong thought it would be best if she didn’t have to climb too many stairs while she’s being treated.”

Belle just stared. He felt the tears welling in his eyes but couldn’t stop them. Limb by limb, he collapsed to the floor like an old plastic bag. His own father hadn’t even paid attention, and Magnus Strong put Judy on the ground floor to keep her from having to climb stairs.

Mr. P closed the door and flopped down beside him. “So, my dear, what seems to be the trouble?”

Belle shook his head and snuffled.

“Try again.”

“I did a really bad thing.”

“What might that have been, my dear?”

He sniffed. “I humped my boss.”

“Hmm. Humped. I’m failing to get a mental image.”

Belle sighed. “It’s probably just as well. I got overzealous and threw myself on Magnus Strong. That might have been okay, but then I—” He dropped his face in his hand. “Oh God.”

“I’m starting to get an image. Continue.”

He popped his head up. “I kissed him, okay? And then, as if that wasn’t the stupidest thing ever done since W said “mission accomplished,” I managed to get my penis in contact with his and—humped. Now do you get the picture?”

Mr. P clapped his hands. “Perfect.”

“Oh, so far from perfect.” He fell back against the large Asian throw rug. “Why did I do it? Why?”

“Excellent question. Why did you do it?”

“He turns me on.”

“What?”

Belle sat up, in his best Frankenstein’s monster imitation. “He turns me on like a large neon light.”

“Because he helped your friend?”

“Way before he helped Judy. Before he helped me, in fact.”

Mr. P smiled. “So you acknowledge that he’s helped you?”

“Oh hell, Mr. P, I’m so confused. I mean, getting won in a poker game doesn’t exactly kick a relationship off on a sterling foot. Plus, that was after he seemed to be stalking me. I assumed he was trying to get me here to—you know—screw me instead of my father.”

“Ah, I see. And now you’ve thrown at him the very thing you assumed he wanted—and he refused it.”

“In a word—yes. I don’t know what to think.”

“There’s only one answer, my dear. Outside the box.”

Excerpts

Magnus
stared at the photo he kept in the top drawer. Quit being sappy. Still, helping Judy Brancoli brought it all back.
He sighed. A good reason to stick with other philanthropies.
Is someone here?
He looked up
just as Belle stepped into his doorway. His heart skipped. What did Belle’s expression
mean? Confusion? Anger? Hope? “Hello.”
Belle
swallowed hard. “Are you the one who called Judy last night?”
Okay, what
had he done now? “Uh, yes. I—I thought—it was so late, and no one else was
here.”
“You had a
ticket waiting for her at the airport and got Leroy to meet her?”
“Yes.”
“And gave
her a job and insurance?”
“I talked to
HR, yes.”
Some huge
storm battled behind Belle’s midnight blue eyes. He didn’t seem to be able to
catch his breath. He just gasped and clutched his chest. Magnus stood. “Are you
okay? Can I get you water?”
Suddenly
Belle took off like a gazelle that had spotted a lion—except he ran to the lion. In three bounding steps, he
crossed the office and hurled himself at Magnus. Before Magnus could prepare, a
tall, slim body hit him full force, arms wrapping around his neck. “Thank you.
Thank you. Oh my God, how can I ever thank you?”
Magnus lost
his balance and staggered, arms coming around Belle, falling until his butt hit
the office chair, which rolled back. They smacked the wall with Belle sprawled
on his lap. He gasped for breath, and the exhale came out as a laugh. It was
like having the world’s cutest dalmatian on his lap—a dalmatian he’d like to
kiss and embrace and otherwise manhandle. Dream
on
.
Belle kept
hugging and muttering, “Thank you. Thank you.”
Magnus
adjusted Belle a little so he was actually sitting on Magnus’s lap but didn’t
make a big enough thing out of it to scare him off. Hell, this was a moment to
savor and prolong.
Finally
Belle stopped wiggling, which was good, since the vibration was getting to
Magnus’s cock. Belle stilled and seemed to hesitate. Reluctance or
embarrassment? He sat back and looked into Magnus’s face. “Hi.”
“Hi.” Magnus
couldn’t help smiling, even though the effect wasn’t really friendly. “I’m very
glad you’re happy.”
“No one’s
ever done such a wonderful thing for me before.”
Magnus tried
to be corporate and fatherly—very challenging in his current position. “It’s
the mission of this company to help women.”
“Yes, but
this was very personal. I’ll be grateful all my life.”
“I’m glad.”
His heart beat so hard they both should have been able to hear it.
Belle looked
down at where he was firmly planted on Magnus’s lap. “I guess I was a bit more
enthusiastic than I planned.”
“You don’t
hear me complaining.”
Belle slowly
looked up at Magnus’s face, which made Magnus want to cringe or hide. Too close. Belle cocked his head and
inspected every inch of Magnus’s ruined landscape of a face. Slowly, he leaned
forward and kissed the scar across the bridge of Magnus’s nose. He whispered,
“In for a penny—” and his mouth moved south until he kissed the distorted
corner of Magnus’s mouth.

 “Looking for someone?”
“Yes. Judy.
My friend. I thought she was coming here.”
“Oh yes. She

Snowden and the 7 Nerds. DRIVEN SNOW is Coming!

DrivenSnow-400x600Hi —

I’m writing this on Nov 6th, which means i have 19 days until the release of DRIVEN SNOW. Yes, i might be jumping the gun just a little! LOL. DRIVEN SNOW is Coming! But i’m excited to share this crazy, quirky novel with you. If you like really romantic romance — and stories that are a little over the top — i think you’ll love Driven Snow. As you may know, it’s a contemporary romance based loosely on a fairy tale trope. In this case, of course, the trope is Snow White.

If you think about it, Snow white has a ton of plot. Way more than most fairy tales. We’ve got beautifulTeaser #3 - Driven Snow central character, evil queens, handsome princes, betraying huntsmen, seven dwarves, near-death experiences, and actual death experiences. While i intended Driven Snow to be a novella, it actually turned into a novel just to accommodate all the twists and turns of the story on which its loosely based. At the same time, i never want to make any of my Pennymaker Tales a parody. I hope you’ll have fun tracing the lines of the familiar tale, but i want the very real love of my guys to hold center stage.

Sinders and Ash
(The Pennymaker Tales Series)
by Tara Lain

Blurb:
Only Mr. Pennymaker knows for sure.

Pennymaker turned and looked at Mark. “What are you working
on?”
“Excuse me? I, uh, have to clean some fireplaces this
morning. You know they keep the rooms cool just so they can use them? Makes
work for me.”
“That’s not what I mean, of course.” Pennymaker turned back
to the rack and pushed some jeans aside. “Aha!” His hand shot through the
garments to the dress form. He made an opening in the clothes and stepped
through to stand beside the red dress. “Perfect. Just beautiful. What a
talent.”
“Excuse me?”
Pennymaker beamed at him. “You have exceptional design
skills.”
God, it was hard to not be flattered. “Thank you, sir.” But
how had Mr. P known to look for the dress? Who’d told him?
Pennymaker walked over to the chair and sat. It creaked.
Hopefully the tiny man wouldn’t strain the old wood too much. “I would like to
show that dress to some people.”
“Uh, who?”
“Let’s say some potential investors.”
No. He couldn’t
get excited. “Really, sir? You’re in the clothing business?”
“I’m in many businesses, my boy.”
Okay, try not to be
suspicious
. “How did you know I was a clothing designer?”
The little man waved a hand. “That lovely T-shirt, of course.”
“No one told you?”
“Who would tell me?”
Had him there.
Pennymaker stepped back and surveyed the dress. “Now, who is
your model?”
What? Mark cocked
his head.
“Whom did you set the dress form to?”
“Oh, uh, myself. I, uh, don’t have anyone else. I’m pretty
slim, so it works.”
“Perfect. Perfect. When do you have to be at work?”
This conversation was crazy. “In about an hour. This is my
morning off. Unless they need me, of course.”
“Good. Put on the dress.”
“What? Why?”
“We’re going for a little walk through the hotel. You’ll be
my… niece. Go on, go on.” He made a shooing gesture with his hands.
Mark shook his head. “Sir, I know I fit the dress to me, but
that’s because I don’t have anyone else. I’m not a transvestite.”
“Never said you were, dear boy. But these people I want to
have see the dress will be much more amenable to taking your designs seriously
if they think of the idea themselves rather than me telling them. That’s how we
all are, now isn’t it? I want them to see the clothes. We don’t have another
model, and we don’t want anyone else in on our secret.”
Secret? “What if
someone recognizes me?”
Pennymaker cocked his head. “That’s very unlikely. You do a
good job making yourself plain and unmemorable with your cap and glasses.”
Mark felt the blush. Shoot.
The man had him dead to rights.
“Besides, people see what they expect, and they certainly
don’t expect to see Mark Sintorella in a dress. Now, put it on.”
Mark stepped behind the rack of clothing. He stripped to his
boxer briefs and stopped. What the hell was he doing? He could jeopardize his
job for this crazyassed little guy with his hairbrained scheme.
The voice came from the other side of the clothes. “Do you
have it on?”
“Sir, I don’t mean to be rude, but are you sure about this?
I really need the money I get from working here.”
“Tut-tut, my boy. Hurry. I want to make one tour around the
lobby and public rooms before you start your shift. Time’s a wastin’.”
Mark pulled the dress over his head and let it fall into
place. The skirt was just full enough to swing when he walked, so no one would
notice his cock under it. “Uh, I don’t have any boobs.”
“Let me see.”
“See what? What I haven’t got?”
He stepped out.
Pennymaker
looked at him studiously. “Gorgeous. You don’t have breasts, but then neither
do some women to speak of. I’m more concerned about the hairy legs. Go shave,
quickly.”
“What? Sir, I don’t think so….”
“This won’t be your only modeling assignment, I suspect, so
think of it as a long-term investment. Consider that brilliant young model who
used to walk the catwalks in both male and female shows. You’re at least her
equal in beauty.”
“But—”

“No buts. This is your future. Now go!”

Does “The One” Exist?

Hi and welcome —

As you might know, i write books with VERY happy endings. My stories are extremely romantic and definitely suggest that my heroes are made for each other. That they have found “The One”.  As i was perusing videos today, i saw one from my fave, Davey Wavey, that said, Disney Lies! He maintains that “The One” is a myth created by Disney which, if applied too liberally, can make us dissatisfied and unhappy. Hmmm. Do i, Queen of Happy endings,  agree?

To a great extent, yes. Davey maintains that there is no One, but rather thousands of ones with which we could be happy. He says the most important part is to love ourselves, respect ourselves, and then bring that whole person to a loving relationship. To that i say Amen!

I believe that we are not one half of a whole and searching for our completion. We’re rather seeking to make ourselves whole, at which point we can offer that wholeness as a complement to someone else. When two people like that come together, it truly can make The One. If we stop searching for some random ideal, and see the perfection in the person we choose to be with, that person becomes The One.

Here is Davey’s take on the subject. Enjoy And if you’d like to see how my heroes find The One, hope over to my Amazon Page and check out the happy ever afters. If you want o Follow me while you’re there, it’s MUCH appreciated. Here’s Davey!

See you soon!
