Beach Balls
(Balls to the Wall Series, #3)
By Tara Lain
Blurb:

Adam James is so far in the closet he could find Narnia. As an attorney for the homophobic WMA Development, he can’t come out without risking the million-dollar paycheck waiting for him once they push their big land development deal through the city council—money that will finally allow Adam to live according to his own terms. Then, on an early morning scuba dive, Adam meets a tall, lean rebreather diver named Sky who makes him want to hug a tree.
Sky Sea Mickeljohn stands for the environment, world peace, and being openly gay. He won’t compromise his principles for anyone—even the damned lying developer lawyer he can’t help lusting after. True, the WMA land development deal could put thousands of people at risk, but Sky still wants to risk his heart. In the fight between freedom and integrity, is there a place for love?

Excerpts

He tipped up
his chin and leaned in. If Sky didn’t want to, all he had to do was lean back,
but he didn’t.
Sweet. Sky’s lips were so soft. Like a girl’s, almost. But that tongue was
pure male, pushing hot and hard between Adam’s lips. Sky grabbed Adam’s head
with both hands. He almost toppled over backward, but Sky held him and
plundered his mouth. Man, his cock was throbbing again. On fire. He wanted to
climb into the back seat and ride Sky all the way to oblivion.
Sky ripped his
mouth away and looked at Adam fiercely. “Crap. I was so nice and satisfied, and
now I’m crazy to fuck you.”
“Likewise.”
“Don’t know
how I’m going to last until Friday, but I guess we gotta. My life’s not my own
for a few days.”
“How about the
middle of the night?” Adam was only half kidding.
“I can’t even
predict my nights until the weekend.”
“I understand.
I have a pretty busy week too.” That was an understatement.
“You in
business?”
“Lawyer.” His
heart was thumping. That’s the most he’d ever told any guy he fucked.
Sky grinned.
“Oh, like the ones at the bottom of the Mariana Trench?”
“Yeah, a good
start.”
Sky leaned
forward and gave him a quick peck on the lips, then pulled his legs into the
car. Adam stood, and Sky closed the door, pushed a button on the dash, and the
car hummed to life. Whir. Ping. Jesus, those cars made weird
noises.
Sky reached a
hand out the window. Adam touched his fingers to Sky’s, and Sky smiled. “See
you Friday.”
“Yeah.”
“I miss you
already.” He drove off, the Prius weirdly silent.
Adam could
barely catch his breath. Miss you already. Shit. That guy was the most dangerous combination of deadly
honest and completely irresistible.
Adam was about
to risk everything for a guy. That sounded way too much like high school. If he
had one ounce of fucking sense, he’d cancel the date and never see Sky again.
But that
feeling in Adam’s chest was not fear. That throbbing in his cock seemed
unlikely to stop any time soon. Chances of walking away from Sky? Zero.

The guys
nearest the beach started laughing and pointing. What’s going on?
He looked at
Gary, who shrugged.
Adam pointed
toward the commotion. “I’m going to go see.” He walked out onto the grassy
verge that led to the sand where he’d been sitting earlier with Sky. The guys
were still laughing. One asked, “What’s he gonna do?”
Adam pushed
into the line of men all facing the ocean and pointing. “What’s happening?”
Ian said,
“This crazy guy is standing there in the water like he’s headed for us, but
he’s not moving. Looks like the
Creature from the Black Lagoon.”
One of the
other men asked, “What’s he wearing?”
Carly smiled
at Adam. “It’s called a dry suit, and it looks to me like he’s waiting for
someone. Wonder who that could be?” He laughed.
Waist-deep in
the water stood a tall man in a full dry suit complete with hood and mask, his
mouthpiece dangling. He had a little bottle of what must be oxygen on his
chest.
I’ve got a funny feeling about this. When Adam stepped off the lawn onto the
sand, the figure in the suit began to pace out of the water with a slow and
deliberate stride.
The “creature”
analogy was dead-on.
When the
creature got out of the surf, he stopped to peel off the mask and hood,
revealing curly hair.
Adam smiled.
He’d know those curls anywhere.
Sky came a few
feet closer. Even in the fading light, Adam imagined he could just make out the
blue-gray eyes.
Sky stopped
again and began to unfasten the dry suit. What kind of show were they in for?
Slowly the
puffy dry suit peeled down the tall body, fully dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and
cargo shorts. A patter of applause started, and Sky kicked off the suit to
reveal flip-flops. Jesus, he must think he was James Bond or something. By this
time everyone was clapping, and Sky gave a little bow.
Son of a bitch, the guy has a sense of
humor
. He’d rigged this
whole elaborate entrance just to get a laugh. But looking at that lean, hard
body in those shorts made another part of Adam’s anatomy very happy.
Sky picked up
the dry suit and walked the ten feet to Adam. “Hi. I believe I was invited for
cocktails.”
No recourse.
He just laughed. “You do know how to make an entrance.”

Sky sat on the
edge of the bed and stared down at James. James’s dark hair shone in the soft
light from the bathroom. Man, he looks
pretty
. He’d hate that, being called pretty. Handsome was better.
Lover. Odd word to pick. Hell, he should be long gone. Nothing about James
appeared to be his type, but there was something about this guy.
Sky leaned
down and kissed the side of the softly open mouth. Sweet. They hadn’t kissed much in that mad fucking session. Yeah,
mad was the word. He pressed his tongue gently against the full lower lip,
saying good-bye.
He spied his
clothes in the heap he’d left them in on the floor.
James moaned
softly. Oh baby, he’d moaned plenty when he was getting fucked. Sky had been
with a lot of bottoms because he liked to top, but no one had ever loved to
take his cock like James. Those lips were so sweet too. He kissed James’s soft
mouth again with just a little pressure. Loved those little prickles of a day’s
growth of beard around his lips.
James clutched
Sky’s hair and crushed his lips against Sky’s. His tongue surged deep into
Sky’s mouth. Whoa. The devil had been
playing possum.
His turn. He
slipped his arms around James’s broad shoulders and pulled him upright, still
kissing like mad. Sky pulled his mouth away, kissed along the stubbly jaw, and
around to James’s ear. “Hi.”
“Hi. Been
awake long? What time is it?”
He flicked a
tongue into James’s ear and appreciated the little gasp. A quick glance
revealed morning wood. Of course, that matched his own. Yeah, they had the
makings of a bonfire. He should go, but…. “It’s about five thirty. I went to
the bathroom. Need to go?”
“Where the
hell would I put that?” He pointed at his hard-on.
“I know how to
get rid of it.” Sky flicked the tongue into James’s ear again.
Another little
gasp. “You do?”
“Hell, yeah.”

He
shrugged and glanced over at the kayak full of Carly’s scuba gear. Might as well get to it….
There
he was—rising from the sea like some merman. Not a bubble. Not a ripple. The
diver just appeared, manifested by Neptune. It had to be the octopus guy,
right? A tall, slim figure strode through the shallow water, navigating the
surf like it wasn’t there. Like it couldn’t drag him down and out to sea.
Octopus-man
stopped at the waterline and pulled off the tanks, unfastened the hood of his
wetsuit and shoved it back, then shook his head like a dog and fluffed out light
brown curls that surrounded his head like a halo.
Perfect,
because from this distance the guy’s face looked totally like an angel. Wide
eyes, full lips, and high cheekbones that gave him a slightly hollow-cheeked
look. The diver walked a few more steps and dropped the rig, then dragged down
the wetsuit, revealing a long, lean body, thin but well-muscled, like a
long-distance runner He must spend a lot of time in the sun if he was a diver,
but his skin was only a pale tan. Man, under his bathing suit he would be
alabaster.
What
else was under that bathing suit?
Adam
forgot to be pissed. The guy started to gather up his stuff, and Adam jumped
up. “Excuse me.”
The
angel face turned toward him. Neutral. Maybe he didn’t recognize him from the
underwater encounter.
Adam
took a couple of steps toward him. “Hey, I’m the guy you chased off the octopus
down there. I know you got there first and all, but hell, all I wanted to do
was see the thing. You didn’t have to make a huge deal out of it.”
A
crease appeared between the arched eyebrows. “Your bubbles. They were bothering
her. I’d been coaxing her out for over an hour, and then you came barging in
like some hippopotamus.” The guy picked up his tanks and started walking.
“Wait!”
Angel
face stopped and looked back.
Okay, why did I stop him? “I’m, uh, sorry. I didn’t realize.
I just saw the thing and really wanted a better look.”

“There’s
a nice aquarium in Long Beach.”

When
they reached the sand, Sky stuck out his hand. Adam looked at it. The sun was
nearly down, but if they were holding hands and ran into someone he knew, he
couldn’t say he was just with a friend.
He
sucked in a deep breath and took Sky’s hand anyway.
Sky
glanced at him. “That seemed harder than it should have been.”
“It’s
complicated.”
His
hand stiffened. “Are you partnered?”
“Hell,
no. I play the field, and I’m not a cheater.”
He relaxed.
They walked a few more steps.
“Just a
coward,” he added. “I’m pretty far in the closet.”
“Sorry.”
“Yeah.”
God, he
actually wanted to tell this guy why. Adam wanted to pour out his whole story.
The work, the clients. Even the family. But that was a crappy idea.
The
narrow sand beach walled by high rocks opened to a small cove. Two runners
jogged past near the water, but the area at the back of the cove was vacant
with just the evidence of earlier sunbathers—flattened areas—on the sand. Sky
led Adam there, then released his hand and sat.
Adam
gave a quick thought to his very expensive slacks, then sat beside Sky, who
nodded back toward Carly’s. “That’s why you’re at the party. Only chance you
have to be gay?”
Adam
nodded. He was chickenshit, and this guy saw it all. “Carly’s a good friend. He
understands. Most of the guys are in similar positions. Not all. Some of them
just like Carly’s mai tais. He’s kind of the lonely-hearts club for closeted
business executives. He does it because he loves to party, and it gives him a
lot of clout when the chips are down.”
“He
knows where the bodies are buried?”
“Literally,
but he never seems to take advantage of his knowledge.”
“So you
get to be gay once a month.”
“Something
like that. I guess you’re out and proud?”
The
curls bounced. “It doesn’t come up much. I’m just gay.” Silence. “I appreciate
you spending some of your precious gay time with me.”
Adam
laughed, but Sky’s face was serious. He meant it.
Adam
shrugged. “I don’t know why, I just like you.” He shook his head. “That didn’t
come out well. I mean, there are lots of reasons to like you, but this isn’t
quite my usual scene. Long walks on the beach. World peace. You know?”
Sky
smiled. “I’m into world peace too.”
Adam
grinned. “I was afraid of that.”
The
waves pounded, birds chirped, gulls squawked, breezes blew, the sun set. He
barely paid attention to these things normally, but right now they seemed a
part of Sky. Like his curls were one with the wind, and his eyes a part of the
darkening horizon.
Poetry? What the hell did this guy do to
him?
Sky
looked at him. Adam felt the heat of his gaze and turned toward the angel face.
Sky’s lips were barely parted. Full and wet. So beautiful.
He
leaned toward Adam. Adam closed the rest of the distance.
Their
lips touched.

Golden Dancer
(Dangerous Dancers Series, #1)
By Tara LainBlurb:

A reporter and the thief he’s investigating both fall for a golden dancer forging a ménage of love and lies that could send one to prison and one to the morgue. Will he get his story or will he get his men?

Mac Macallister is obsessed. The online news reporter needs enough evidence to write a story accusing billionaire art collector Daniel Terrebone of stealing The Golden Dancer, a priceless work of art, from son-of-a-Nazi Horst Von Berg. The story promises the recognition Mac craves. Then Mac meets a real golden dancer, ballet star Trelain Medveyev, and his attraction to the man rocks his formerly straight world.
When the mysterious Terrebone “collects” this beautiful dancer, too, Mac rushes to the rescue like a knight in shining cargo pants and plunges into a three-way passion that tears him between love and guilt. Can Mac keep investigating when his story could send one man to prison and another to the morgue? Will this reporter get his story or get his men?
Publisher’s Note: This book has previously been released elsewhere. It has been revised and re-edited for re-release with Pride Publishing.

Excerpts

Trelain
snuggled tight, resting his head in the crook of Mac’s shoulder, and that was
when the second lesson came up. Women did not provide a hard cock to rub
against him. Holy crap, he needed to back away. But his half-hard cock poked Trelain’s
flat belly, and it felt so good. Way too good.
Trelain
gave a little humming sound that might have been a moan, and though he could
claim they were just dancing, that cock moved with mind-searing precision, up,
down, a bit to the side. Mac’s dick filled relentlessly until it hurt.
Explosion imminent. Jesus, just the thought of Trelain tortured him. The
reality was more than he could stand. Get
the hell out of here.
He
ripped himself out of the dancer’s arms. “Sorry, gotta go.” Slouching a little
in hopes that the bagginess of his cargoes would cover his throbbing erection,
he headed through the open doors and across the great room. There were far
fewer people to observe his humiliation in here. Goal—get to the door.
“Mac,
don’t go.”
He
glanced over his shoulder at Trelain and almost stopped. Hell, no. Go now.
He
almost made it to the front door when a big solid body stepped in front of him.
“Mac, what the hell do you think you’re doing?”
“Get
out of my way, Terrebone.”
“Hell,
no. Come with me.” Daniel grabbed and pulled him into the hall that led toward
the back of the house. Mac started to pull back when he was spun and pushed
hard against the wall.
“Daniel.
What are you doing? Don’t hurt him.” Trelain’s voice sounded distraught.
Terrebone
pushed his face into Mac’s. “I’m not hurting him, darling. He’s hurting
himself. This man has got to realize that he wants you and you want him and,
for that matter, he probably wants me.”
The bastard. Mac tried to pull away, but shit, the guy was strong. Daniel pressed
his forearm harder against his neck. One hand reached down and grabbed Mac’s
cock, still stiff despite the shock. “Feel this? It’s not some anomaly or weird
mistake, Mac. You’re hot for Trelain. Does that make you gay? I’d say yes, but
I’m not into definitions. Who the fuck cares? You just have to quit torturing
yourself and everyone else. You hear me?”
Okay, calm down so you can fucking breathe. Relax.
No, don’t want to hear it. Terrebone pushed a tiny bit harder.
“Do…you…hear…me?”
Crap!
Mac managed to nod, and Terrebone released him.
“Fuck,
Terrebone, what the hell…?” He rubbed at his throat. His pride hurt more than
his neck if he was honest. “I’m so out of here.” He started for the door and
again got dragged back. Shit, where did this guy work out? With the Russian
Mafia? Mac was a runner, but this guy must lift weights.

Daniel
pounded him against the wall again, but this time no arm came up. Instead, the
man pressed his mouth to Mac’s. Fuck!
Mac twisted, but the soft mouth just kept moving against his while the strong
hands held him still. Oh yeah, soft. Mac felt a silky, liquid tongue caress his
lips, back and forth. He tried to move his head, but no use. No use…no use not
just letting that pressing tongue go where it wanted. His lips opened a tiny
crack, and Daniel took full advantage, pushing that wet, hot tongue farther
into his mouth. Mac tried to move his tongue out of the way, but…no use. Hot
and wet against his tongue. Filling his mouth with hot and wet.

The man turned and gave Trelain that wolfish grin again.
Close up, he really was lovely with those deep, dark eyes, and dark curving
brows contrasted with the shock of silver hair. “I thought I’d rescue you.”
Trelain smiled. “And I thought I was getting champagne.”
The man stared at him for a moment then looked up and
waggled a finger seemingly into space. Moments later, a waiter appeared out of
the crowd carrying a tray packed with bubbly. The man grinned. “Would you like
it all?”
Trelain smiled back. Daniel seemed a man who got what he
wanted. But then, so was Trelain. He selected a full glass from the tray. “One
should be sufficient.”
The man took another one, though he didn’t seem to drink
it. “But more is better.”
The waiter left, and Trelain took a sip. “Your philosophy
of life, I presume?”
“Totally.”
“So who are you, Daniel?” Trelain noticed that people
milled all around them, but no one interfered.
“A child of the universe. A lover of art in its myriad
forms. A surfer and diver. Oh, yes, and I dabble in computer software
sometimes.”
Trelain glanced at him sideways. “Dabble? Like Bill
Gates?”
The guy gave a huge smile. “Yes, precisely like that.”
No doubt richer than Croesus, based on the deference
everyone seemed to show him. “So, what exactly does ‘rescuing’ me look like?”
“If you’ll let me, I’ll take you to my home in Laguna
Beach. Sun, surf, relaxation.”
“Mr. uh…”
“Terrebone. Daniel.”
“Are you propositioning me?”
The man leaned down so his lips were close to Trelain’s
ear. His breath smelled like peppermint. “I am propositioning you at every
level, Cavalier. You are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen on two feet,
and I want you near me. Preferably under me for hours at a time.”
Bloody hell.
Trelain smoothed a hand down his arm to try to control the goosebumps.
The man chuckled. “I think that sounds good to you.”
A little distance was required. Trelain stepped back.
“You are more than persuasive, uh, Daniel, but you also impress me as a man who
is used to getting what he wants. Perhaps I don’t enjoy being one of a
multitude.” Yes, he was being flirtatious, but it was also true. Maybe part of
the appeal of the reporter had been that he wasn’t usually attracted to men.
Trelain liked being special. Hell, who didn’t?
Daniel very discreetly ran his fingers up Trelain’s arm.
Good. He wasn’t trying to make a show of possession. “It’s true, my friend,
that I have had many brief encounters in my past. I don’t think you know
anything about me—why would you? But others will delight in telling you of my
peccadilloes, so I might as well come clean. That was the past, however. I have
not been in a relationship of any kind for many months. I am weary of the game.
I want someone special in my life, and you, my friend, are very special.”
Trelain smiled. His thoughts had been answered. He opened
his mouth to speak, but Terrebone put up a hand. “One more thing. I won’t rush
you or crowd you. I would love to have you come to my home as a guest with no
strings attached.”
Trelain cleared his throat. “I am dancing three nights
this week, and I believe Laguna Beach is some distance from here.”
“About an hour. But you’re free on Thursday, I believe?”
“Yes.”
“Why don’t you pack your bathing suit”—he gave that
charming, lecherous grin— “or not, and I’ll send a car for you after your
performance. I’ll have a massage therapist standing by, my chef will prepare
all your favorite foods, and you can have a quiet vacation for a few days.”
Suddenly, Trelain was too tired for banter. A vacation
sounded like heaven, and if it was with this beautiful man, all the better. He
might have a thing for that silly reporter, but it was a stupid, fruitless
crush. This man was handsome, rich, and seemed sincere. And he knew he was gay.
A huge improvement. “I would love to come.”
Daniel looked surprised, then delighted. “You are a world
of surprises, Cavalier. I like that in a man.”
Trelain sipped the last of his champagne and glanced at
the still-milling crowd of patrons. He sighed. “And now I must continue my role
as money-grubber-in-chief.” He bowed slightly. “If you’ll excuse me.”
“Oh, one more thing. Please give this to Allison.”
Terrebone handed him a scrap of paper. It said IOU $1,000,000.
“Fucking hell.”
“Not enough? I just wanted Allison to know I hadn’t been
wasting your precious time.”
Trelain carefully folded the paper. He laughed all the
way back to the group of donors surrounding the anxious program director.

It was still sexy, still sweet, but with just Teaser #5 - Tackling The Tight End by Tara Lainenough of a taste of the eerie and obscene that I was left turning the pages until it was over. Tackling The Tight End

(Long Pass Chronicles Series, #3)

By Tara Lain

Blurb:

Everyone wants the best for SCU student and tight end, Raven Nez—and they know exactly what that is. Enter the NFL draft, become a big football hero, promote his tribe’s casino, and make a lot of money to help people on the reservation. Just one problem. Raven really wants to work with gay kids, and while he loves his tribe and likes football, his visions for the future don’t mesh with theirs. Then the casino board hires a talented student filmmaker to create ads for the tribal business and asks Raven to work with him. But the filmmaker is Dennis Hascomb, a guy with so much to hide and a life so ugly it’s beyond Raven’s understanding. Still he’s drawn to Dennis’s pain and incredible ability to survive. Captivated by Raven’s stories of the two-spirited and by the amazing joy of finally having a friend, Dennis knows he has to break free from everything he’s ever been taught was good—but that’s a struggle that could kill him and Raven, too. Is there a chance for “the great red hope” and the “whitest guy on earth”? A future for the serpent and the raven?

Excerpts

Raven laid out paper plates with pizza, two Cokes, and a
bowl of potato chips on a box he used for a coffee table in front of the couch.
He set them up so that Dennis either had to sit on the floor—not too
comfortable, considering it was very worn carpet—or sit beside Raven. Maybe he
could get Dennis to relax a little.
The movie started, and Dennis took a bite of cheese and
artichoke hearts. He sighed and closed his eyes for a second.
Raven smiled. “Good?”
“Oh yeah. I always have dinner with my parents, which
means I never get to eat anything normal.”
“They must really have bought into all that crap about
eating together keeps the family together.”
“Yeah.” He pointed at the screen. “Okay, so you know this
was partly an homage to the old western serials, right?”
Raven wrote in the air as he said, “Cowboooooys in
Spaaaaaace.”
“Exactly. But it goes a lot deeper. It’s a real Biblical
epic battle of good versus evil. I mean Luke, right? This is the book of Luke.
And the Force. Interesting that most of the ordinary dumb bad guys make fun of
the ancient religion, but Darth Vader knows and uses the Force. That’s what
makes him so powerful. Darth, of course, is a play on Dark, and all the Darths
in the series are the most dangerous villains.”
“Vader is short for invader?”
“I think that’s where it came from, but did you know that
vader means father in Dutch?” He
laughed. “They probably weren’t so surprised at the whole ‘Luke’s father’
revelation in the Netherlands.”
“No kidding?”
Dennis leaned forward for a piece of pepperoni pizza just
as Raven grabbed for the same one. Their hands touched as they both held the
crust. Raven grinned. “If they did this in a movie, you’d probably say it was
contrived, right? Could never happen. The director should get a more original
idea to get them together.”
“Yeah.” Raven heard Dennis swallow.
“So now that you have us here, director Hascomb, what do
you plan to do with us?”
Dennis swallowed again, lifted his thumb, and gently rubbed
Raven’s little finger.
Well damn, he’d had a fair amount of sex in his
twenty-one years, but nothing had ever dived straight to his dick quite as fast
as that gentle caress. “Man, you do it for me.”
“I-I do?”
“Yeah. That’s no demand or even request. I just want you
to know.”
“What’s it like to kiss a guy?”
Their fingers stroked and twined. Nothing else moved if he
didn’t count the expanding of cocks. “I don’t know. It’s great. Maybe not that
different from kissing a girl. More stubble, I guess.” Raven wiped his other
hand across his chin. “But not from me. No beard.”
“I’ve never kissed a girl. I tried to have sex a couple
times but skipped the kissing part.”
“Well, hell, man. That means—”
On the screen, the 3-D projection of Princess Leia popped
out of the communication device in R2-D2. Dennis stared at their linked hands.
“Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi—”
Raven joined in. “You’re our only hope.” He reached a
hand around Dennis’s head and pulled him closer, then pressed half-open lips to
Dennis’s closed mouth. Stroking gently, he persuaded those full pink lips apart
and slipped his tongue slightly between. Dennis startled, but Raven held his
head just tight enough to keep them in contact, but not so tight as to scare
him.
Dennis shivered, made a little gurgling sound in his
throat, brought his hands up against Raven’s shoulders, and then—some dam gave
way. He dissolved in Raven’s arms, even wrapping his own around Raven’s chest,
and oh God, his mouth opened, accepting all of Raven’s tongue. Sweet. As Raven’s tongue slid in, Dennis
sucked. Jesus, Raven practically came just from the heat of that suction.

“Hi. I’ve been trying to reach you.”
Those blue-green eyes flicked all over the room. “Sorry.
I was so busy. When I found I had this short window, I just came here. I
figured you’d be tied up, so I didn’t bother you.”
Raven crossed his arms. “What’s going on?”
“What?” Dennis swallowed hard.
“Come on.” Raven took his arm and pulled. Dennis pulled
back, but Raven was stronger, and Dennis obviously didn’t want to make a scene,
so he walked as if it was his idea. Raven pushed the side door open and half
guided, half hauled Dennis out to the smoking patio, where no smokers were
currently hanging out. He dropped him in a chair and pulled another one over
beside him. “Talk.”
Dennis crossed his arms. “About what, Raven? I don’t have
much time, and I need to get some more footage.”
“I don’t care if you never get another inch of video
again.”
That got his attention. “What?”
“Two days ago you and I were dissecting Pulp Fiction and planning a video for
the Gay Youth Shelter. Now you won’t look me in the eye. What happened?”
He shook his head but said nothing.
“Dennis? I’m serious. I’m not going to work with you like
this.”
Again he just shook his head, but damn, were those tears?
Raven reached out and touched his hand. Dennis yanked his
hand back into his own lap.
“Come on.”
Dennis blinked. “Where?”
“We’re going for a walk.” He extended his hand. Dennis
didn’t take it, but he stood. Raven started walking, and Dennis fell in beside
him.
The casino stood on a patch of land that abutted a flood
control channel. They’d planted bushes and trees in a strip along the channel
to make it a pleasant walkway, with benches here and there. Since it was a
weekday, nobody was out. Raven ambled quietly for about fifteen minutes. Dennis
walked beside him but hardly seemed relaxed. His shoulders bowed, and he stared
at his feet. Finally Raven flopped down onto one of the benches. For a couple of
minutes Dennis stayed standing, but then he gave in and sat.
Raven picked up a small rock and tossed it. “Want to talk
about it?”
Dennis shook his head again.
“Something bad happened.” He didn’t make it a question.
“I guess.”
“Did I offend you in some way?”
His head snapped up. “No. No way, man.”
“But I must be involved somehow, or you wouldn’t be
avoiding me.”
“Kind of. I mean, indirectly.”
“Would it make a difference if I said I promise to be
discreet? Tell nobody unless you say it’s okay?”
“You know, don’t you?”
Raven shrugged. “No. I’m just thinking about what might
be upsetting you.”
“I think I’m gay.”
Raven smiled. “Two-spirited.”
Dennis cracked a half grin. “Did you guess that?”
“Maybe a little.”
“Do I look like a fag?”
Raven glanced at him sideways. “Remember who you’re talking
to.”
“Sorry. I just thought it might be like a big neon sign
on my head or something.”
“No. But I’m not usually attracted to straight men.”
Dennis’s head swung toward Raven in an arc. “Uh, do you,
I mean, uh—”
“Am I attracted to you? Yes, very.”
“Holy shit.” The H
came out in a long breath.
Raven looked over. “Does that idea appeal to you?”
“I think so.”
Not a ringing
endorsement
. “So that’s why I thought there was a chance you were gay. I
sensed the attraction between us. That’s all.”
“All? Jesus, that’s kind of amazing.”
Better. “So is
that why you’ve been avoiding me?”
Dennis nodded. “Kind of. Being gay isn’t really
convenient for me.” He laughed, but it didn’t sound funny.
“Have you got a girlfriend?”
“No. Parents.”
“I know about that.”
That look of pain blinked in his eyes and was gone.
“So why do you think you’re gay?”
He frowned. “I thought you said I was.”
Raven grinned. “My word isn’t law on this subject. I just
said I thought you might be since I feel a pull between us. But maybe you’re
straight and I just think you’re gorgeous.”
Dennis swallowed. “Thank you. I think. I’ve kind of
suspected for a while. I don’t much like girls. Like that, I mean. Never have.
But I’ve never been with a guy.”
Raven smiled. “Are you asexual, or do you jerk off a
lot?”
He looked uncomfortable, but before Raven could tell him
not to answer, he said, “I spank the monkey when I can.” He breathed. Weird.
Most young guys jerked off all the time. Dennis raised his head. “But I’m not
asexual. I’m definitely attracted to guys.”
“Surprised you haven’t done anything about it. I’m sure
you’ve had interest.”
He stared at his hands. “It’s complicated.”
“Look, just because you think you’re gay doesn’t mean you
have to start cruising West Hollywood. Take it slow. It’s your life, man. Live
it like you want.” He should listen to his own advice.
“I wish.” Apparently they had that in common.
Birds chirped and breezes blew, but Dennis looked like he
was at the bottom of a well with no ladder.
Raven put a firm hand on Dennis’s arm. Dennis jumped, but
Raven didn’t move. “Hey, I like you. We have to work together. Let’s just be
friends and not worry about the rest, okay?”
“Really?” He looked up with pleading eyes.
“Yeah. What do you think, I have to jump your bones just
because you’re pretty? We have two videos to make, right? Maybe, if you’ve got
time, we have some movies to see and shit.” Raven grinned.
For a second he thought Dennis might cry. Instead he
smiled like he’d witnessed the second coming. “I’d like that, man.”
“Good. So would I. Now let’s get back to the buffet and
video it right before we eat some of it, okay?”
Dennis smiled, but as they walked, he wiped a hand across
his eyes.

TaraLain_FastBalls_453Here is my Sunday Snog! It’s from F.A.S.T. Balls and no one has read this scene except those who have read the book! First the blurb:

A hot, gay firefighter could send Mick’s life up in flames…

Firefighter and surfing champion Jerry Wallender is a member of FAST—the Firefighter Assist and Search Team. But while the rest of the world thinks he’s a hero, he just doesn’t see it. He keeps falling for these intellectual guys who wind up making him feel dumb and needy. On top of that, Mick Cassidy, super-gorgeous firefighter and total homophobe, makes Jerry’s life miserable with his slurs. Until the night of the Firefighter’s Ball, when Jerry offers Mick a helping hand and gets a hand job in return.

Mick Cassidy is great at fighting fires and solving math problems. But he’s rotten with people—until he meets Jerry, the nicest, kindest man he’s ever known. Raised by a gay-hating preacher, Mick grew up despising men like Jerry. He’s never wanted a woman, but he can’t stop thinking about the strong, sexy firefighter and what they shared at the Firefighter’s Ball. Does that make him gay? And if he’s gay, what will happen to his whole, carefully constructed life?

“Jerry?”

“Yeah.”

“Do guys kiss?”

Where did that come from? “You mean like gay guys? Sure, just like straight guys do.”

“I’ve kissed a girl.”

He almost laughed since it sounded like a song. No, Mick was deadly serious. “I’m sure you have.”

And then all hell broke loose.

Mick stepped forward and grabbed Jerry’s face in his big hands. Jeez, he couldn’t even catch a breath. Mick’s lips descended and all of a sudden Jerry had warm mouth and hot tongue all over the place.

What the hell? He froze. Should he pull back? No, he couldn’t insult Mick. That could hurt him. Umm. Besides, that tongue was suh-weet! He opened a crack, and weirdly Mick took full advantage, pressing into the recesses of Jerry’s mouth.

Well, hell. Andres’s kiss hadn’t really done it for him, but this? Everything about Mick, physically at least, suited Jerry down to the ground. He was bigger, stronger. Jerry could feel his biceps straining through the material of his uniform. His mouth tasted like heaven. He even smelled like Jerry’s idea of a good time. Kind of clean and musky at the same time.

How was this happening? No idea. Should he be doing this? No. Did he care? He should. Yes, he should. But then Mick moaned and pulled Jerry into his body tight. The last of the alcohol fumes from his little binge earlier drifted into his brain. Oh shit. Ruined. Jerry wrapped his arms around Mick’s neck and kissed him back like he wasn’t tongue fucking the biggest homophobe on the planet.
