AF2E1349ECD0F8C01FE6CA4F52E92FSummer of Love. Hmmm. How about a true story. A handsome young architect named Todd and i met as part of a spiritual group seven years before we ever looked at each other with interest. We knew each other casually. Then one July, we both ended up going to Los Angeles to see a play as part of the group we both belonged to. We all carpooled in different people’s cars, but a bunch of us decided to have dinner at the same restaurant and i wound up sitting across the table from him. I had just had my hair curled (it was the 80s! LOL) and he looked at me and said, “So this is the new Tara. Very nice.” It was the first personal thing he ever said to me.

The next month, a hot August, the woman i worked for was looking for an architect to check out a building she was considering buying to determine if it could be built-out to work for our company. She had tried one architect but didn’t like his ideas. I told her i knew an architect casually but didn’t know his work at all. She asked me to call him so i did. I honestly wasn’t aware i was plotting! I had no interest in a relationship at that time.

He came over the next day and i took him to see the building. It was like one of those old movie scenes where the walls fade away and people sing Some Enchanted Evening!  LOL. After looking at the building, i invited him to lunch to thank him for his time. We talked and discovered that we were both scheduled to go to the mountains where our group had a retreat site to do some volunteer work that weekend. He asked if i’d like to go with him and his daughter who was visiting him. I agreed and it turned out he drove an old Ferrari which his daughter called “the E ticket”. We dropped his daughter off at her grandparents, flew up the mountain and did our work, but by the time we started back, he pulled over at a rest stop and we looked at each other and said, “Okay, what’s going on.” We went on to his parents to pick up his daughter and his mom started telling me about her honeymoon. Not subtle! LOLHuahine-Intro-1

That was the end of August. On October 9th, my birthday, we went to the beach and decided to get married. He gave me a shell ring. Since he didn’t have much vacation coming, we determined that the best time to for a honeymoon was between Christmas and New Years since he had a friend who could get us a special price on a trip to Tahiti. So we were married on December 5th — the only day we could get the venue on such short notice! That was going on 33 years ago and every one of those years has been happy. Some summer romances do stick!
