I write books about people who are Lucky in Love. My stories are emotional and have very happy endings as a rule. I think i do that because i’ve been very lucky in love myself. Married to my honey for 31 years, i’m just as dewy-eyed as i was on our wedding day. Maybe more so, because writing romances makes a person pretty romantic! I believe in love, so it’s not a stretch for me to give my heroes happy endings no matter how unlikely and impossible their situation may seem.
I thought i’d include a scene from a book with a very unlikely pair of lovers. I know some of you have read Hearts and Flour, but if you haven’t here’s a nibble of the love affair between a vegan health food fanatic and a cupcake baker.
Excerpt : HEARTS AND FLOUR by Tara Lain; MM Contemporary; The Vegan and the Cupcake Baker

Available at Amazon  ARe

To Micah Truveen, raw, vegan food is his religion. So when his devoted customers show up with white flour cupcakes, Micah could kill. Then Micah comes home to find his boyfriend, Dharamaram, in bed with someone else. He throws the rat out and agrees to go to his friend’s orgiastic anti-Valentines party where he meets a gorgeous cross-dressing guy who gives him a night to remember.

Southerner Quentin Darby wishes he could stop wearing women’s clothes. He so wants to live up to his grandmother’s glowing opinion of him, he’s never even told her he’s gay. And now there’s Micah who makes him wish he could just be who he is. But Micah finds out that Quentin is the baker responsible for the plague of cupcakes afflicting the community! And Dharmaram adds a little blackmail to the mix. Can two hearts rise above the flour?
Gasping for breath, he stopped outside the store. Locked. Of course. It was only eight thirty in the morning. At least Dharmaram’s class didn’t start until nine. If only Quentin would come here to the shop right after he dropped off his grandmother. Or maybe even before. Oh God. What if he went in and Dharmaram confronted them together? No warning. Just a smack in the face. Maybe he should run to the yoga studio? He took two steps down the pavement—

“Micah?”

He turned back to see that beautiful face. A beautiful face and body—dressed in men’s clothes. He’d seen Quentin as Queen. He’d seen Quentin naked. But this was the first time seeing him as a man.

“Wow.”

Of course, that masculine image was slightly compromised by the fact that Quentin wore an apron over his jeans and T-shirt. An apron covered in flour and dough. Micah wanted to lick it off. The first processed food he’d had in years.

Quentin wiped his hands. “What did you want?”

His eyes wouldn’t focus. He just wanted to keep staring at that loveliness.

“Maybe I could get one of your raw cupcakes?”

“You came here before opening for a cupcake?”

Micah shook his head. “No. I have something to tell you. Something pretty awful.”

Quentin frowned. “Something more awful than you going back to your yoga teacher a few hours after we had sex?”

Micah breathed out hard. “It’s related to that. Where can we talk?”

“There’s people baking in the kitchen. You know, baking that poison I make and force on people?” He stood very upright.

“I’m truly sorry for that. Just, please, let me tell you what’s happened.”

“OK.” Quentin stepped aside and pointed to the back. Micah walked into the shop, assailed again by the sweetest of smells. No second sweetest, after Quentin.

Quentin walked through the door that led to the kitchen and Micah followed. He turned right and stepped into a small office with a desk, computer, and a filing cabinet. Quentin pointed to a straight-back chair across from the desk. He took the desk chair. “So what did you want to tell me?”

Whew. Face-to-face, this was tough duty. His heart beat so hard he could feel it in his toes. “I, uh, I really care about you.”

Who knew Quentin’s face could get that angry. “You sure have a unique way of showing it, sugah.”

“Wait. I’ve done a bunch of dumb things, and I’m not sure which is dumbest. First, I did that whole priggish song and dance about the cupcakes being poison when I should have been telling you how much I admire you and appreciate how you take care of your grandmother. And I really want to know why you created those raw cupcakes—” he held up a hand “—but first I have to tell you about my other idiot moves. The reason you saw me with Dharmaram is because he was blackmailing me. He figured out that the beautiful woman he saw me with is the grandson of his most proper southern lady student, and he threatened to tell

Mary Beth about you if I didn’t take him back in. What you saw was him moving his stuff into my guest room. That’s guest room.”

Quentin’s mouth literally hung open. “But why did you do that? Why didn’t you tell me?”

Micah shrugged. “I knew if I told you, you’d immediately come out to your grandmother, and I didn’t want to force you to do something you didn’t want to do.”

“So you’ve been hosting that snake in the grass on account of me?” The blue eyes widened to saucer expanse.

Micah shifted in the chair. “I was. But that’s why I ran here so fast this morning. I just couldn’t do it anymore. I woke up this morning and he was climbing in bed with me. I threw him out again.”

“Good.”

“Not good, because he’s going to go straight to Mary Beth and—”

“Who’s going straight to me, darling?”

The soft southern voice came around the partly closed door followed by a curly head and blue eyes that sparkled just like her grandson’s.

He would have smiled but fear seemed to have frozen him solid. What could they say? All he could do was follow Quentin’s lead.

A Valentine’s Story for Valentine’s Day!

Hi everyone!

Happy Valentines Day! I was wondering what to post today when i realized that i could only do one thing! Since i wrote a true Valentine’s Day story, i have to post a scene from that book that only the people who have read the book have seen. (And i should mention that the group who have read it is BIG since it’s been on the gay romance bestseller list at Amazon since it came out. For which i thank you!)

So here is a special little scene from Hearts and Flour!

Micah rose up and slowly pulled his soft cock from that lovely spot. He slipped off the condom and backed off the bed. “Be right back.” He padded into the bathroom, tossed the condom, and warmed a washcloth then came back and wiped off Quentin. “I have something I’d like to give you.”

“What?”

 “I’ll show you.”

He grabbed a robe from the hook behind the door. Furtwangler fell in behind him as he walked to the kitchen. “I forgot about this until now, buddy. What do you think?”

“Merwaowr.” “Yeah. I think I really got it for Quentin too.”

He stretched up to the top cabinet and retrieved the box he had hidden there two weeks before. The cat rubbed against his legs. “Yeah, I like this idea.”

He walked back into the bedroom. The washcloth was gone and Quentin had straightened the covers. He sat leaning against the headboard, his soft curls framing that angelic face.

Micah sat on the edge of the bed. “You can refuse this and I’ll understand. When I bought this I thought it was for someone else. Now I realize I bought it because I love it and it was always for you.” He handed Quentin the silver wrapped box.

 “Should I open it?”

“Absolutely. It’s yours.” Micah put out a hand and stopped Quentin’s fingers on the bow. “It’s a
reminder.”

“Of what?”

“Open it.” Quentin undid the bow and then pulled off the paper. When he opened the box, the gold bracelet glimmered and the little carved dolphins danced around its perimeter. “Oh my stars, it’s beautiful.”

“Not as beautiful as you. Will you wear it?”

His smile was shy. “If you want me to.”

Micah took the gold band and unclasped it, then fit it around Quentin’s slim wrist. “Whether you’re dressed as Queen or as Quentin, you’re unique and beautiful. I’d love it if this could remind you of that.”

“Oh my.” Tears dripped onto Quentin’s smiling lips. Micah leaned forward for a kiss. “I’ll be forever grateful to Valentine’s Day.”

“And to anti-Valentine’s Day.”

About those heartbreakers! Even though i write MM and menage romance so i create a lot of male characters, none of my heroes are heartbreakers on purpose. My guys are too earnest for that. But they do sometimes break their lover’s hearts by accident. Those also tend to be the kinds of books and heroes i like to read.

Like my tough cop, Ryan Star, in Snow Balls. He breaks JJ’s heart by forcing him to sneak around and not admitting they are lovers. But Ryan is just trying to survive. He thinks coming out of the closet can be fatal in his line of work and he has to grow enough to realize his love is stronger than his fear.

I’m currently reading the wonderful Amy Lane’s Chase in Shadow. Chase breaks our hearts along with Tommy’s and his own because he’s so wounded he can’t live the life he wants so desperately. And in my new release, Hearts and Flour, my vegan, health food lover, Micah, breaks the gentle Quentin’s heart when he chooses his overwrought principles instead of Quentin’s affection. I did, however, recently read a book about a classic heartbreaker  — the utterly charming short by my RWA chapter-mate, Tessa Dare, called The Scandalous, Dissolute, No-Good, Mr. Wright. Now doesn’t that just sum it up?  LOL

In case you’d like to read a bit of my new beautiful boys, here’s a nibble of Hearts and Flour:

A Sweet and Spicy Excerpt from HEARTS AND FLOUR! A Little Cross-Dressing!

Hi everyone–

My new novella, Hearts and Flour, comes out this Friday. Once it releases we start the Blog Tour, so i won’t have space to post any excerpts here. They’ll all be at other blogs. So here’s a sweet and spicy excerpt from the book. Tomorrow? A Hotter than salsa excerpt! Ready?

Excerpt : HEARTS AND FLOUR by Tara Lain; MM Contemporary; The Vegan and the Cupcake Baker

Available Feb 1 at Amazon  ARe

Micah took both his hands and led Quentin out of the living room and down the hall to the room at the end. Sigh. His bedroom.

Like the rest of the house, the room was pretty simple, but the bed stretched across the room with clean white sheets and a lovely, deep blue and yellow comforter.

Micah backed himself to the edge of the bed and sat, still holding Quentin’s hands. “May I see your other self now?”

His smile was so sweet, no way Quentin could refuse. Whew. He was nervous as a cat in a rocking chair store.

He freed his hands from Micah’s and slowly unbuttoned the silk blouse. When it gaped open, he pulled it off, leaving him bare to the waist except for the padded bra. He dropped the blouse on the chair beside the bed then reached back and unfastened his bra.

When it came off, Micah’s eyes widened. “Beautiful.”

Quentin grinned. “Why? There’s not much to see.”

“Your chest is very masculine. Well-muscled but boyish. So pretty.” Micah reached up and ran his hands over Quentin’s nipples.

“Oh my.” The buds tightened in anticipation.

Micah smiled and pulled back his hands. “What’s next?”

Quentin giggled. “You’re enjoying this I think.”

“Oh my, yes, as you would say.”

“OK.” Quentin reached up and slipped his thumbs under the edge of his wig.

Micah gasped. “Wait. I thought that was your hair.”

“No. It’s just a very good wig. Shall I leave it on?”

He shook his head. “No. No, I want to see.”

Quentin glanced at him sideways. “You could be disappointed.”

“No. I want to see.”

Quentin pulled the wig off. His own hair was so light, he didn’t have to cover it to wear the wig. As the wig came off, he shook his head like a dog in the water and his curls flew around his head.

Micah smiled. “I’ll be damned. How could you be prettier with your own hair? But you are.”

Quentin’s heart beat fast. He had never done this. He was Quentin or he was Queen. He’d never gone from one to the other with someone watching. “You say the sweetest things.”

How the Heck Do You Write Blogs for a Tour?

Hi everyone–
I’m currently putting together my blogs for the I Love Hearts and Flour Blog Tour which starts this coming Friday. (Be sure and check out Beautiful Boys Books for all the rules and prizes and stops on the tour come Friday) One of the main things that stops people from doing blog tours is fear of blogging! And the number one question– what do i blog about? Writers get paralyzed with fear at the idea they have to write 10 blogs! So here is a quick primer on choosing blog topics.Whether you’re a writer or a reader, some of these can be helpful for your blogs.

As you may know, i write magazine articles and blogs for my clients as part of my day job, so i have lots of practice. For my clients, i start with their products. What do i want the customer to know? Then i ask “what problems does my client’s product solve for the customer?” And i start there. Blogging about the customer’s problem and, oh by the way, here’s a solution.

Blogging about books is much the same. I ask, what are some fun things i might like the reader to know about my book? Can i gather interesting data about that topic? For example, here are some blog topics i created for Hearts and Flour:

  • One of my heroes is a cross-dresser, so i researched the history of cross-dressing. It was fascinating and i hope it makes a fun blog.
  • One hero (the cross-dresser) is a cupcake baker. Everyone loves cupcakes! So i have a blog about interesting cupcake flavors with a recipe.
  • The other hero is a health food fanatic. I’m a bit of a health food fan myself, so i blogged about wheat grass and some other health foodie subjects.
  • The book is related to Valentine’s Day so i included a blog on the history of the holiday
  • I love unique book titles and Hearts and Flour is one of those, so i blogged about the fun of creating titles
Get the idea? Just keep asking, what’s fun and unique about the book? How can i delve into that topic a little? Voila! You have your blogs.
Hearts and Flour is coming Friday! Check out Beautiful Boys Books to get a peek at the prizes! And join the newsletter to get updates on all the fun events. See you there!

Sexy Nibbles! My Book Hors d’oeuvres

Hi everyone–
I am deeep in writing my WIP–werewolf book as yet untitled — and getting ready for the release of Hearts and Flour on Feb 1st. So i thought i’d do a little snack of some of my recent books in case you haven’t read them and want to take a taste. At the end, i’m including a few lines of Hearts and Flour as well, just to get you salivating. (Don’t you love the food metaphors. I’m under the influence of my cupcake baker in Hearts and Flour.) All of these scenes are posted here for the first time, so unless you’ve read the books you haven’t seen them before.

The first is from Genetic Celebrity, one of my two books nominated for a CAPA (happy dance!):

Booky didn’t believe it. Mama had just praised Tommy. “Tommy has a boatload of hidden talents.” She stared at the guy. Suddenly she felt like she was seeing every one of those talents for the first time.

Mama gazed at Tommy appraisingly. “I can see that already. So Tommy, have you got a girlfriend?”

“Mama!”

Mama shrugged. “Sue me. This young man is a catch, and the female world ought to know about it.”

“Mama, Tommy is gay.”

The green eyes flashed up at her. “No, I’m not.”

What?“You’re not? But…I thought…” Wow.

Mama rocked back and laughed. “No wonder you’re not married when you go around making that kind of mistake.”

“Mama! Tommy…”

He looked at Mama. “Booky isn’t entirely wrong, Estelle. I do like guys. But I like women too. I’m what they call bisexual.”

Rochelle shook her head. “Well, at least we girls get half a crack at you.”

Mama leaned forward. Her serious expression was hilarious. “So how are you knowing you like both men and women? I mean I always went for the gorgeous guys when I was young, you know. So do you get that tingle from both?”

He treated her question with respect even though he was beet red. What a doll. A bisexual doll. “Well, yes, I always liked girls, and then when I was in my teens I started noticing that I was attracted by certain guys. It’s never changed.”

Jeff looked fascinated. “So if you go to a party, you could be turned on by everyone in the room.”

Tommy shook his head. “No, I’m pretty picky. I only like certain people, male or female. I’ve never been able to explain it.”

Mama shook her head. “So nu, what does your family think of this ambidextrous affection?”

“They pretty much hate it.”

“Hate? How can a family hate what their child is?”

Booky glanced at her. “You hate that I’m single, Mama.”

Her mother’s hands flew out. “You weren’t born single!”

“Yes, I was.”

They all started to laugh.

And here’s a tiny snippet of Brush with Catastrophe, also nominated for a CAPA–

RYDER OPENED HIS eyes. Everything was different. He felt like he’d been beaten with a baseball bat. Dark. Cold sheets. Sammy’s smell, and something else. Like burning flesh. He listened. No breathing. Sammy was gone! Was he in the bathroom? Where was Al?

Silence.

Why hadn’t he wakened? Where was Sam?

He threw off the sheets and jumped out of bed.

The room lit up like a Christmas tree.

His knees collapsed, and he fell to the mattress.

Shit! He was gasping like he’d run a race. He sighed. And he had. A race to who he was. He stared at his arm and hand where they lay against the white sheets. Glowing vines twining like he was lighted from the inside. Couldn’t he have had one more day?

He pushed himself to sitting, scooted to the edge of the bed, and put his feet on the floor. Had to be careful. Get his legs under him. Speaking of legs. He stared down at his calves. They were at least an inch longer than they had been when he went to bed. It made sense. His father was tall.

He stood, wobbled, and sat back down. One more try. Up. He balanced. Okay. Now for walking. He took a step, balanced again, then one more. Finally he got to the end of the bed where he could see in the ratty mirror on the back of the bathroom door.

Hell. He wasn’t going to blend in with the humans anymore.

And, as promised, a little bit of Hearts and Flour coming to a reseller near you on Feb 1. : )

Six Sentences of HEARTS and FLOUR! The Vegan and the Baker.

Hi all– Happy Six Sentence Sunday! Thanks to all who came out the last two days to wish me a happy second anniversary as a published author! Prize winners will be announced tomorrow!

Now, for my sentences. On Feb 1st, my new book, Hearts and Flour, comes out. This is a little nibble from that book:

All the windows were draped or shuttered. Yeah, and Micah knew why. Yancy’s Anti-Valentine’s Day party was infamous. A big gaggle of gay men got together to say phooey and fuck-off to all the hearts and flowers bullshit of the holiday while sealing the deal with a ton of mindless sex in Yancy’s hot tub, sauna, poolhouse, and miscellaneous bedrooms. Or so Micah had heard. He’d never made the party despite the fact that he and Yancy were close friends. Everybody knew that Micah believed in love. Yancy, not so much.

And now go see all the other authors who are posting sentences today by clicking HERE!
Have a great rest of your weekend! : )

“Hearts and Flour” by Tara Lain is the Next Big Thing

Hi everyone–

I’m delighted to be the next big thing!! Or at least to be a part of it. I’m going to answer some questions about my WIP and then send you to the four other authors who will share with you next Wednesday:

What is your working title of your book?
The title of my WIP which will be released by Etopia Press in February is Hearts and Flour

Where did the idea come from for the book?
I’m a bit of a health food fan, and i wondered what would happen if a real vegan, raw food fanatic were to fall for a guy who owns a cupcake store

What genre does your book fall under?
My book is contemporary, gay erotic romance

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
Hmmm. Very hard. My one hero, Quentin, wears women’s clothes and passes easily as a girl. Though he’s not an actor technically, think of Bill Kaulitz as a blond with curly hair.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
A gay health food fanatic falls for a beautiful guy in drag not realizing he’s the owner of a much-despised cupcake store.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
The book will be published by Etopia Press

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
It’s a novella and is taking about one and a half months

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
Jet Myles a Rose is a Rose is a little like it but that wonderful story is more about the transvestite.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?
I actually thought of the title before i conceived of the entire story. I was captivated by the play on words of “hearts and flour”.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

One of the heroes likes to wear women’s clothes but is afraid his respectable southern grandmother will find out about it.
